The promotion of Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar to the world of Formula 1 was a “natural choice,” according to Racing Bulls Team Principal Laurent Mekies. The decision came with ease after Red Bull’s split with Sergio Perez following the culmination of the 2024 F1 season.

Milton Keynes-based Red Bull swiftly finalized their lineup across two teams, bringing Liam Lawson on board to join Max Verstappen in 2025. The question of who would pair with Yuki Tsunoda at Racing Bulls was answered with the addition of Hadjar, the 2024 Formula 2 vice-champion. This decision was made within a few days into the off-season, adding the last piece to the Red Bull puzzle.

Mekies, speaking to selected media outlets ahead of F1 75, stated that Hadjar was an obvious selection. He was the next candidate in line from the Red Bull junior programme. Mekies stated, “The most natural part of the process was to get Isack in. He was very clearly the next one in line in terms of the Red Bull Young Drivers programme.”

Mekies further explained their long-time interest in Hadjar and how they had been following his career for quite some time. The decision to bring him on board was not a surprise to those in the know, as it was an “easy one.”

However, for Hadjar, the journey to becoming an F1 driver for Racing Bulls wasn’t as straightforward. Amid an F2 title fight, Hadjar was left in suspense, uncertain of when the call would come. He admitted that being left in the dark wasn’t easy. “I officially found out after Abu Dhabi. When I stepped up to reserve, I was just focused on trying to win that F2 title and learn in this new environment,” he stated.

Despite a heartbreaking end to his F2 title challenge, Hadjar has quickly moved on to bigger ambitions. His F2 title hopes were dashed in the final round, when he stalled at the starting line, losing the title to Gabriel Bortoleto. However, Hadjar is undeterred, setting his sights firmly on the pinnacle of the sport. He boldly claimed, “Yeah, my goal is not to be an F2 champion, it’s to be an F1 world champion, so I’m fine.”

With his clear determination, Hadjar is undoubtedly a rising star in the Formula 1 arena. As he gears up for his debut in the elite motor racing championship, fans and critics alike will be keenly watching his performance.
