Isack Hadjar: The Bold Contender Ready to Defy the ‘Verstappen Curse’ at Red Bull

In the cutthroat world of Formula 1, being Max Verstappen’s teammate has become synonymous with career turmoil. Names like Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, and Liam Lawson have all experienced the brutal reality of racing alongside the Dutch maestro, each one falling victim to the relentless pressure that comes with it. Now, as the sixth driver to join this notorious lineup, Yuki Tsunoda finds himself facing a daunting task. However, a beacon of hope has emerged on the horizon: Isack Hadjar, the rising star poised to break the cycle of despair.

Hadjar, fresh off an impressive rookie season, has been handpicked to navigate the relentless challenges at Red Bull Racing for the 2026 season. Unlike his predecessors, who have crumbled under the immense expectations and unique demands of Verstappen’s driving style, Hadjar may possess the tools necessary to thrive. It’s no secret that Red Bull’s cars, molded around Verstappen’s distinctive approach since he took the helm in 2019, have not been kind to other drivers. The vehicles are designed for a razor-sharp response, allowing Verstappen to dominate the track with unparalleled precision.

As Albon lamented after his dismissal, the overwhelming nervousness of these cars can lead to a vicious cycle where drivers lose their rhythm and ultimately falter. Verstappen has been in a league of his own since mid-2018, leaving a trail of disheartened teammates in his wake. Yet, Hadjar stands on the brink of a new era. The 2026 regulations herald an unprecedented overhaul of both chassis and power units, creating a unique opportunity for the young driver to carve out his own identity within the team.

This monumental shift means that Hadjar will not be shackled by the ghosts of those who came before him. Instead, he can adapt the new RB22 to his own style, free from the burdens of past failures, particularly those of Perez, Lawson, and Tsunoda during this new wave of ground-effects racing.

Moreover, the dynamics within the Red Bull camp have shifted dramatically. Lawson’s abrupt exit—following an uncomfortable stint that saw team upheaval—signaled a changing of the guard. The team’s environment is now ripe for new beginnings, and Hadjar could find the support he needs to flourish. Laurent Mekies, who has a wealth of experience nurturing young talent, is at the helm and could provide Hadjar with the guidance required to settle in and grow.

This isn’t the Red Bull Racing of old, and this transformation could be exactly what Isack Hadjar needs. As he prepares to enter the most formidable challenge in F1—teaming up with the formidable Max Verstappen—the stakes have never been higher. Will he rise to the occasion and rewrite the narrative of those before him? The world will be watching as Hadjar takes his shot at defying the Verstappen curse, and if successful, he could redefine what it means to be a teammate to one of the greatest drivers in history.
