Há um futuro potencial na Fórmula 1 para o talento mais misterioso da IndyCar?

In the recent qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo’s fifth place for RB demonstrated why many, including key members of the Red Bull Formula 1 team, still have faith in him. It served as a reminder of the driver they know he can be, showing his exceptional performance when everything falls into place.

At the same time, hundreds of miles away from Montreal, another driver who could potentially be in that RB F1 car was also putting on an impressive display. However, his race did not have the desired result.

Let’s go back 21 months to the chaotic driver market, when Oscar Piastri chose McLaren instead of Alpine (and ironically, Ricciardo’s spot). AlphaTauri, which was known as AlphaTauri at the time, struggled to find a suitable replacement for Pierre Gasly, who was going to Alpine. They chose Nyck de Vries, but he was quickly replaced by Ricciardo.

Could Colton Herta have performed better in that position? If the FIA had shown the same regulatory flexibility as it did in the case of Kimi Antonelli, would Herta, and not Ricciardo, be in the RB car? It is uncertain. Herta would have less experience in Formula 1 and European motorsport compared to De Vries, and he would have faced a more challenging adaptation process in a team known for its impatience.

It has been over two years since Herta won his last race in IndyCar. Obtaining a superlicense is becoming increasingly difficult, as he only managed tenth place in the last two championships. Although he remains a long-term option for F1 due to the support of Andretti, he is involved in the ongoing entry saga. Is he really a better prospect for the next American F1 driver than his IndyCar teammate, Kyle Kirkwood?

However, during the recent race at Road America, Herta showcased his exceptional skills. He was two seconds faster than anyone else during the rainy practice and dominated the early stages of qualifying. Unfortunately, a red flag caused by Josef Newgarden’s accident interrupted Herta’s momentum. Despite starting from the back of the grid, Herta managed to recover to sixth place, only 3.5 seconds behind Kirkwood, who was leading the race.

At just 24 years old, Herta still has time to change his career trajectory. Is the gap between his evident talent and his race results due to him, Andretti, or a combination of both? Is he a driver who shines in certain moments but struggles with consistency and loses focus when races slip away? Are his deficiencies a result of his circumstances, or is he responsible for creating those circumstances?

Currently, Herta resembles Jean Alesi in 1990s F1. Undoubtedly, there is a special ability in him, but it is still unclear whether he can effectively harness it when it truly matters. There is a fear that he may reach the end of his career without reaching his true potential.

Could Herta have qualified the RB car in fifth place for the Canadian GP? With his F1 experience, he probably has the speed to do so. How many current F1 drivers could lead a rainy practice session at Road America by two seconds, even with IndyCar experience? There is something exceptional about Herta, evident from the beginning of his full-time IndyCar career when he achieved immediate success.

His speed suggests that he has the potential to become an IndyCar champion multiple times and the most competitive American in F1 in decades. However, there are still uncertainties regarding the other aspects of his racing package beyond raw speed. Will we ever have the opportunity to witness his true potential?

There are several question marks regarding Herta’s future, but occasional flashes of brilliance, like his performance at Road America, leave us hopeful and eager for the chance to see these questions answered in an environment that allows Herta to maximize his immense potential.
