The Formula 1 grid is no stranger to fierce competition, and Jack Doohan’s tenure at Alpine might already be under scrutiny following the high-profile signing of Franco Colapinto. The 21-year-old Argentinian’s arrival from Williams has raised serious questions about Doohan’s future in F1, with Alpine now boasting a robust roster of talented prospects ready to step up.

Colapinto’s Meteoric Rise

Colapinto’s impressive debut with Williams in 2024 turned heads. Replacing Logan Sargeant mid-season, the Argentinian showed promise by finishing 12th on debut at Monza and scoring five points over the final seven races. Despite his success, Williams faced a driver logjam with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz locked in for 2025, prompting them to cash in on Colapinto’s rising stock.

In a January 9 announcement, Alpine confirmed Colapinto’s multi-year deal, beating out Red Bull in the race to sign the young talent. The team sees him as a key asset for the future.

“Now, it is time for a new chapter, and to take on this challenge with Alpine is truly an honour,” Colapinto said. “I cannot wait to get started and see where this journey takes us.”

The Pressure Mounts on Doohan

Doohan’s future at Alpine appears increasingly precarious. After a lackluster 2024 Abu Dhabi GP debut—qualifying 17th and finishing 15th—reports suggest his contract includes performance clauses that could see him axed if he fails to meet expectations. With Alpine’s acquisition of not only Colapinto but also Ryo Hirakawa and Paul Aron, the Australian now faces stiff competition.

Adding to the pressure is Alpine’s no-nonsense leadership under Flavio Briatore, who is known for demanding immediate results. The team’s eagerness to bring in multiple prospects hints at a lack of long-term confidence in Doohan’s ability to deliver.

Alpine’s Talent Pipeline: A Crowded Future

Alpine’s strategy of securing a trio of promising talents—Colapinto, Hirakawa, and Aron—signals its commitment to future-proofing its lineup. While this strengthens the team’s depth, it also leaves Doohan in a precarious position.

Reports indicate that Doohan’s performance in the 2025 season opener at Albert Park will be critical. A strong showing at his home race could buy him time, but another underwhelming performance might hasten his exit from F1.

Colapinto’s Signing: A Boon for Alpine, A Blow for Doohan

Colapinto’s arrival represents both an opportunity and a threat for Alpine. His proven ability to adapt quickly and deliver results makes him a valuable asset. However, his signing further crowds an already competitive environment, casting a shadow over Doohan’s prospects.

The Clock is Ticking for Doohan

As the 2025 Formula 1 season approaches, Jack Doohan finds himself in a fight for survival. With Franco Colapinto’s signing and Alpine’s growing pool of talent, the pressure to perform has never been higher. The Australian’s performance at the Australian Grand Prix may well determine his future in Formula 1.

Will Doohan rise to the occasion, or will the likes of Colapinto and Alpine’s other rising stars take his place? The clock is ticking, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
