Is it business as usual for Verstappen and Red Bull at the Japanese Grand Prix?

É negócio normal para Verstappen e Red Bull no Grande Prêmio do Japão?

Verstappen emerged victorious from the lead position in his last two appearances at the Honda-owned figure-eight circuit, partner of Red Bull, and on both occasions, he managed a substantial lead after an earlier setback.

In 2022, after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Suzuka returned and Verstappen triumphed in a rain-shortened race, defeating his teammate Sergio Perez by 27 seconds to secure his second F1 drivers’ championship. In the previous race in Singapore, won by Perez, Verstappen only managed a seventh-place finish.

Last year, in the Singapore Grand Prix won by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, marking Red Bull’s only defeat of the season, Verstappen finished fifth. However, he dominated in Suzuka, setting the fastest lap and securing a victory with a 19-second lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris.

This time, Verstappen arrives at Suzuka after his first retirement since 2022, ending his streak of nine consecutive wins. Sainz won in Melbourne in a Ferrari one-two with Charles Leclerc.

Verstappen’s two victories in the Japanese GP came much later in the year, as Suzuka moved from a September/October date that determined the championship to the peak tourist season. However, Red Bull is hopeful that history will repeat itself.

“Unfortunately, we had a retirement in Australia, so we hope to show our speed again here,” Verstappen expressed during a fan event in Tokyo.

“In the last two years, but especially last year, Suzuka has been a fantastic venue for me, so I hope we can replicate that success.”

The fast and flowing layout of Suzuka, with the impressive 130R corner, presents a distinct challenge compared to previous races in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Melbourne. However, this intricate circuit can also favor the skills of Red Bull.

Rumors suggest that the champions will introduce a significant update to the car, with special attention to aerodynamic adjustments on the sidepods.

Ferrari has emerged as the main competitor to Red Bull, with Leclerc currently trailing Verstappen by just four points. During the fan event, Scuderia team principal Fred Vasseur stated: “The competition is incredibly fierce and every weekend we need to start from scratch and push ourselves repeatedly.”

McLaren, Aston Martin, and Mercedes can also expect to be competitive, although Mercedes risks falling to fifth place overall as it continues to struggle with the performance of its car.

Japanese fans will be delighted to support two local drivers during the first practice session. Ayumu Iwasa will replace Australian Daniel Ricciardo alongside Yuki Tsunoda in the Red Bull-owned RB team.

Haas’ Japanese team principal Ayao Komatsu will also make his debut on Japanese soil since taking over the role in January. The American-owned team is aiming for a third consecutive points finish.

Williams will be back at full strength after racing in Australia with just one car due to Alex Albon’s accident. Unfortunately, the team still won’t have a spare car for the Japanese GP. (Written by Alan Baldwin)
