Formula 1 design icon, Adrian Newey, may be on the verge of leaving Red Bull Racing, with rumors circulating about a possible move to a rival team. Throughout his illustrious career, Newey’s F1 cars have secured an impressive 25 drivers’ and constructors’ championships across three different teams. After joining Red Bull in 2006, Newey has held various positions, including his current role as the team’s technical director. However, his future at the team has been uncertain, especially with the recent scandal involving team principal, Christian Horner. Reports suggest that Newey has informed Red Bull of his intention to depart, further fueling speculation. Negotiating a shorter period of paid leave would allow Newey to work for another team next year, but Red Bull indicates that this may not be possible. Although retirement is still an option for Newey, his dissatisfaction with the situation involving Horner and the internal power struggle within the team have played a significant role in his decision-making process. As the most important figure in Red Bull’s history, Newey’s potential departure could have a profound impact on the team’s competitive prospects. F1 rival teams are likely to vie for Newey’s services, with Ferrari and Aston Martin being mentioned as possible destinations. Ferrari’s aggressive pursuit of success, coupled with the recent signing of Lewis Hamilton, makes them an attractive option for Newey. On the other hand, Aston Martin’s ambition and their acquisition of Red Bull’s engine contract for 2026 offer an intriguing opportunity for him to stay in the UK. Although Aston Martin has denied making an offer to Newey, securing his services would undoubtedly strengthen their technical team. The fragmented leadership within Red Bull has already prompted rivals, such as Mercedes, to eagerly capitalize on the situation. Mercedes’ team principal, Toto Wolff, has publicly courted Max Verstappen, Red Bull’s star driver, in an attempt to lure him away from the team. Verstappen has emphasized the importance of retaining key figures within Red Bull, including Newey, but the potential departure of both Newey and Horner could leave the team vulnerable. Losing Newey, widely regarded as the greatest F1 designer of all time, would undoubtedly have a significant impact on Red Bull Racing.
