Inside the Track: Key Predictions and Insights for the Upcoming F1 2025 Pre-Season Testing

The curtain is set to rise on the 2025 Formula 1 season with a dramatic pre-season test in Bahrain. The test, slated to run from February 26 to 28, promises to reveal the secrets hidden under the hoods of the competing teams, and we are all eyes. As we countdown to this high-octane event, we’ve identified 10 crucial aspects that we, and you, should be keenly observing.

A significant mystery to be uncovered is Red Bull’s strategy to bounce back from their 2024 slump. After clinching the title with Max Verstappen, the team has been tight-lipped about their 2025 car, leaving all of us in suspense. The Bahrain test could potentially showcase the first real glimpse of their strategy to regain dominance.

The test won’t be just about lap times; it will also be a crucial litmus test for the drivers’ comfort with their new machines. As Mercedes driver George Russell succinctly put it, “Within five laps you know if you’re in for a good season or not.” While lap times will indeed be a factor, other elements like fuel loads, engine modes, tyre compounds, track conditions, and time of day also hold sway in the overall analysis.

An intriguing storyline to follow will be Lewis Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari. Having driven three different Ferraris in private tests, Hamilton appears confident of overcoming his past issues with Mercedes. However, he also acknowledges a steep learning curve. The test will provide initial insights into Hamilton’s adaptation and how it might shape Ferrari’s season.

Meanwhile, all eyes will also be on Hamilton’s successor at Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli, and Liam Lawson at Red Bull. Both face high expectations, and their performance during the test could offer a preview of their respective rookie seasons.

The test will also indicate whether teams who have taken aggressive design approaches will reap rewards or rue their decisions. For instance, McLaren has taken a bold step with its anti-dive front suspension solution, while Ferrari is banking on a complete front geometry overhaul. Will these changes pay off, or backfire? Only the test will tell.

The Bahrain test could also expose any teams in hot water. Remember Williams in 2019? Their car was slow, overweight, and even illegal. Last year, Alpine suffered from an overweight and out-of-sorts car. Who will be this year’s unfortunate team?

Another subplot to observe is the evolution of the second Red Bull team, now rebranded as Racing Bulls. The team has moved onto the main Red Bull campus and adopted a new livery. Will this heightened Red Bull synergy translate into improved on-track performance?

Alpine, known for its erratic performance and off-track issues, will also be under the spotlight. The test will provide a glimpse into which version of the team we can expect this season.

An impending rule change in June will reduce the tolerance for moveable front wings by a third. The Bahrain test could expose whether teams are ready for this change or if a short flexi-wing war looms on the horizon.

Finally, keep an eye on the rookies. How will they fare in their first big test? Ollie Bearman at Haas, Jack Doohan at Alpine, Kimi Antonelli at Mercedes, Isack Hadjar at Racing Bulls, and Gabriel Bortoleto at Sauber will all be under scrutiny.

In essence, the Bahrain test will set the tone for the 2025 Formula 1 season. It’s time to fasten our seatbelts and prepare for a thrilling ride!
