The imposition of a 25% tariff on all imported cars to the USA, which will take effect from April 2, is leaving the European automotive industry outraged.
The most recent case is from the British company Ineos, which has “fired off” in all directions, criticizing the European Union for failing to mobilize to negotiate a solution with the administration of President Donald Trump.
Ineos reminds that the US decision should not have come as a surprise to anyone in the European Union (EU) and could and should have been avoided. “This is what happens when politicians sit on their hands. As a growing automotive brand based in the EU, we are vulnerable to tariffs and we need our politicians to support our businesses, our jobs, and our economies. We need urgent and direct political intervention on tariffs”, said Lynn Calder, CEO of Ineos Automotive, in a statement.
The Ineos statement further adds that the British brand, which produces the Grenadier SUV and the Grenadier Quartermaster, models that are sold in the United States, is ready to support the EU’s measures.
“We will give all the support we can to our political leaders to keep the playing field level for small and competitive brands like Grenadier. But we need to see action from EU politicians: only they are in a position to address the issue”.
