IndyCar updates rules on blocking and establishes new minimum weights for 2024.

IndyCar atualiza regras sobre bloqueio e estabelece novos pesos mínimos para 2024.

A series of new regulations will be implemented for all drivers in the upcoming season. The NTT IndyCar Series has released its latest rulebook, which will be applicable to the future season, and there are some important changes to take note of. One of the most significant alterations concerns the definition of blocking, as the language used has been clarified. Previous versions of rule 9.3.2, which outlined what IndyCar considered blocking, stated that drivers should not alter their racing line in response to pursuing drivers. The new wording is more specific, stating that any driver who reacts and changes their line based on the actions of pursuing competitors may face penalties. This modification aligns with IndyCar’s planned enforcement of zigzagging on the straights during the Indianapolis 500, which was revealed a few weeks ago. The exact details regarding the implementation of the new rules have not been clarified yet, but the foundation has been set for Race Control to work from it.

On the technical side, the new rulebook provides details on the weight reduction of cars starting from the St. Petersburg Grand Prix this weekend. All cars will have new components designed to accommodate future hybrid powertrain parts, and these components are visibly lighter. Several parts of the car have been specifically lightened to offset the additional weight of the electric powertrain. However, since these parts will only be installed later in the year, the cars will run with less downforce in the early stages of the season. Overall, the cars are now 25 pounds lighter compared to last season. The weight of the road and street course setup has decreased from 1700 pounds to 1675 pounds, while the speed setup used in the Indianapolis 500 has decreased from 1655 pounds to 1630 pounds. This weight reduction should result in faster lap times and potentially in the breaking of some track records early in the season.

More details in the rule book reveal that there will no longer be a different tire compound used for the oval race at World Wide Technology Raceway, commonly known as Gateway. In 2023, the 1.25-mile oval used two different tire compounds as a test to determine if they would lead to more exciting strategic decisions. Although the experiment was largely problem-free, it did not significantly impact the various strategies employed. As a result, it appears that the series will continue to use the alternative tire compound only for road and street courses. Another change involves adjusting the track size that distinguishes a short oval from a superspeedway. The limit was changed from 1.3 miles to 1.4 miles, classifying the newly named Nashville Superspeedway, despite its name, as a short oval due to its length of 1.33 miles. Consequently, the race at this track will be contested with the IndyCar high downforce aero package, leaving the Indianapolis 500 as the only race on the calendar where the slimmer front and rear wings will be used. The first race under the new rules is scheduled for this weekend, taking place on the streets of St. Petersburg on March 10.
