IndyCar Unleashes High-Speed Revolution: Groundbreaking Tire and Brake Tests Transform IMS Oval!

NTT IndyCar Series driver Josef Newgarden (2) races during the Music City Grand Prix at the Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025.

Revving Up the Future: IndyCar’s High-Stakes Tire and Brake Tests at the Legendary IMS Oval

In a thrilling display of speed and precision, IndyCar recently took to the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) for a series of groundbreaking tests that could shape the future of the sport. Over two action-packed days, drivers Pato O’Ward and Alex Palou pushed the limits of their high-performance machines on the historic 2.5-mile oval, focusing on a critical mission: evaluating cutting-edge tire compounds from Firestone.

With the roar of engines echoing through the hallowed grounds of IMS, O’Ward and Palou were not just racing against the clock; they were on a quest for optimal performance at speeds nearing a staggering 230 MPH. “One of [the test compounds] stood out to me,” O’Ward declared, his excitement palpable. “That tire was just way better in every way in terms of feeling and how the balance of the car was throughout the stint. I think it will make everything better. It was definitely in the right direction.”

But the tire evaluation was just one part of a multi-faceted testing agenda. As they sped around the oval, both drivers provided crucial feedback on a newly repaved section of Turn 2, which had undergone significant repairs to eliminate a bump that had plagued the track for years. In an unexpected twist, the resurfacing unearthed original layers of asphalt dating back to the track’s inception in 1909, a testament to the storied history of this motorsport mecca. The smoothness of the new surface was put to the ultimate test as the drivers raced over it at full throttle, offering invaluable insights into its performance.

Adding to the excitement, two seasoned Indy 500 champions, Alexander Rossi and Takuma Sato, also took part in the action, meticulously testing various brake and shock packages. Their invaluable insights will be critical in evaluating components for potential integration into the newly developing chassis package set to debut in the 2028 season, ensuring the future of IndyCar remains as exhilarating as ever.

Rossi and Sato were on the track for both days of testing, while O’Ward and Palou focused on tire evaluations during the initial day. The collaborative effort between these elite drivers and the tire engineers represents a pivotal moment for IndyCar as it seeks to enhance performance and safety on the track.

As the dust settles on this high-octane testing session at IMS, one thing is clear: IndyCar is not just racing toward the future; it’s redefining what’s possible in motorsport. With advancements in tire technology and a commitment to continuous improvement, fans can expect the upcoming seasons to be more thrilling than ever. Keep your engines revved, because IndyCar is gearing up for a spectacular ride ahead!
