IndyCar: The Best-Kept Secret in Motorsports, Says New Lead TV Presenter Will Buxton

Renowned motorsports presenter, Will Buxton, recently made headlines as he transitioned from Formula 1 to become the lead TV presenter for IndyCar under FOX. A long-time fan of American open wheel racing, Buxton revealed his perspective on IndyCar, dubbing it as “motorsport’s best-kept secret.”

In an intriguing revelation, Buxton suggested that despite the global silence, there’s a unanimous opinion within the racing community that IndyCar indeed provides the finest racing experience on the planet. However, the silent acknowledgement remains hushed, as admitting this, according to Buxton, would be tantamount to undermining their own championships.

As Buxton embraces his new role, he will be in the company of several drivers who have also transitioned from Formula 1 to IndyCar, such as Marcus Ericsson. The 2022 IndyCar grid is additionally graced by a number of Formula 2 alumni, including Robert Shwartzman, Callum Ilott, Christian Lundgaard, and Marcus Armstrong.

However, Buxton shared an intriguing insight into the apprehension gripping many Formula 1 veterans and hopefuls, deterring their switch to IndyCar. The fear, as he explains, is twofold. First, the high-speed racing on ovals, which can reach up to 235 MPH, is intimidating. Second, the fear of public humiliation looms large.

This fear is not unfounded, as demonstrated by the experiences of Fernando Alonso, considered one of the greatest racers of his time. Alonso’s promising start at his inaugural Indianapolis 500 was followed by a failure to even qualify the subsequent year. The stark contrast in his performance can serve as a cautionary tale to Formula 1 drivers considering the switch to IndyCar.

Despite the perceived fears and challenges, Buxton commended the audacity of drivers who dare to make the leap, showcasing their willingness to test their mettle in the intense world of IndyCar racing.

As he embarks on his new journey, Buxton will be sharing the commentary booth with seasoned IndyCar drivers James Hinchcliffe and Townsend Bell, commencing at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg this weekend. As we eagerly await the unfolding of this exciting chapter in IndyCar, Buxton’s insights offer a fresh perspective on the global motorsports landscape.
