In response to a call from the IndyCar Series, The Thermal Club has undertaken a significant remodeling of its final corner sequence leading to the main straightaway. This move came after last year’s event saw drivers catapulting into the air while maneuvering a left sweep at the Turn 16-17 section. The spectacle, which was captured in captivating slow-motion footage, saw cars leaping over the crest and curbing before making a hard right onto the start/finish straight.
The Thermal Club has now substantially leveled the jump-inducing section of the circuit. This strategic adjustment is anticipated to mitigate damage to the fragile magnesium bellhousings, which house IndyCar’s energy recovery systems and are positioned between the engines and transmissions.
Addressing this modification, Thermal GM Nicholas Rhoades confided to RACER, “We’ve made several revisions over the winter. After each test, we’ve implemented a change, so we’re hopeful for a smooth race. It’s a significant improvement from last year.”
The reassessment of the track was put to the test by several drivers earlier this year, including Andretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson. While Ericsson admitted an improvement has been made, he cautioned that the troublesome bump hasn’t been entirely eliminated.
Detailing the changes, Ericsson explained, “They removed some of the curbing and laid down some concrete. It’s certainly flatter now, yet you still feel a grinding sensation as you traverse the asphalt/concrete before joining the curve and re-entering the track. The racing line still navigates this alteration, and it’s by no means completely smooth. It’s an improvement, but a noticeable bump still remains – albeit less aggressive compared to what it was.”
IndyCar fans and teams alike are hopeful that these modifications will make for a safer and more competitive race during the upcoming IndyCar GP. The Thermal Club has been proactive in its efforts to refine and optimize the track, closely monitoring ticket sales and tweaking tire allocations. As the racing community eagerly anticipates the ‘cheese grater’ Thermal Club event, all eyes will be on the final turns to see if these alterations have indeed made a difference.
