After a rain delay that postponed the start of the Indianapolis 500 by four hours, the group of 33 drivers finally received the green flag and immediately unleashed their pent-up aggression.
In the final laps, an intense battle unfolded, ultimately resulting in Josef Newgarden’s victory as he executed a daring pass on the outside of Turn 3 on the last lap, leaving Pato O’Ward behind.
As a reward for achieving consecutive wins, Newgarden received a generous $440,000 bonus from Borg-Warner, a prize that had been accumulating since the last consecutive champion.
During the 200 laps of the race, there were a total of eight caution periods, and only 22 cars managed to cross the finish line. It was a forgettable day for a significant portion of the field.
Despite the fatigue and stress of race day, there is no time for competitors to rest. In just a few days, the paddock will gather for an exciting race through the streets of Detroit.
