IndyCar 2025: New races, legendary challenges, and the quest to dethrone Alex Palou

NTT IndyCar Series driver Alex Palou (10) drives during practice for the Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024.

After an exhilarating 2024 season, IndyCar is set for an even bigger and bolder year in 2025. With a new race at the luxurious Thermal Club, the series’ debut on Fox TV, and plenty of drivers eager to topple three-time champion Alex Palou, fans have a thrilling season to anticipate.

The iconic variety of IndyCar

IndyCar remains unique in its ability to deliver high-octane racing across road courses, street circuits, and ovals. This year’s calendar reflects that diversity, featuring four street circuits, seven road courses, and six ovals, including the legendary Indianapolis 500—the world’s largest single-day sporting event.

The season opener takes place at the picturesque St. Petersburg street circuit on March 2, a race that has become synonymous with sunshine, waterfront views, and thrilling wheel-to-wheel action. From there, the series moves to the Thermal Club in California, a state-of-the-art private motorsports facility making its debut on March 23.

2025 IndyCar calendar

  • St. Petersburg – March 2 (street circuit)
  • Thermal Club – March 23 (road course)
  • Long Beach – April 13 (street circuit)
  • Barber Motorsports Park – May 4 (road course)
  • Indianapolis road course – May 10 (road course)
  • Indianapolis 500 – May 25 (oval)
  • Detroit – June 1 (street circuit)
  • Gateway – June 15 (oval)
  • Road America – June 22 (road course)
  • Mid-Ohio – July 6 (road course)
  • Iowa doubleheader – July 12/13 (oval)
  • Toronto – July 20 (street circuit)
  • Laguna Seca – July 27 (road course)
  • Portland – August 10 (road course)
  • Milwaukee Mile – August 24 (oval)
  • Nashville – August 31 (oval)

Spotlight on the Indianapolis 500

The jewel in IndyCar’s crown, the Indy 500, is set for May 25, with fans from around the globe flocking to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Josef Newgarden will aim for a historic third consecutive win, a feat no driver has achieved.

Here’s the Indy 500 week schedule:

  • May 13-15: Practice sessions
  • May 16: Fast Friday (qualifying boost practice)
  • May 17: Qualifying for positions 13-30
  • May 18: Pole Shootout (top 12 positions) and Bump Day (positions 31-33 finalized)
  • May 19: Short practice session
  • May 23: Carb Day (final practice)
  • May 24: Legends Day (ceremonial and fan events)
  • May 25: Indy 500 race day

Who can challenge Alex Palou?

Alex Palou enters 2025 as the reigning three-time champion, but the field is hungry to topple the Spaniard. Teams like McLaren and Penske have strong lineups, and drivers like Pato O’Ward and Josef Newgarden are determined to take the crown.

Palou’s consistency and adaptability across all track types make him formidable, but the growing competitiveness of the series means he’ll face stiff challenges every weekend.

Why 2025 is a must-watch season

With Fox taking over IndyCar coverage, fans can expect fresh presentation, expanded storylines, and broader access to the sport. The debut of the Thermal Club race and the potential for history at the Indy 500 add intrigue to an already loaded calendar.

Whether you’re tuning in for the thrilling speed of ovals or the technical brilliance of road courses, the 2025 IndyCar season promises unforgettable drama and action.
