Indy NXT Seeks New Leadership as Penske Entertainment Parts Ways with Director Richard Buck

The motorsport world has been set abuzz with the recent news of Penske Entertainment parting ways with the newly appointed Indy NXT director, Richard Buck. Buck, a former NASCAR executive, had been named as the torchbearer of IndyCar’s development series on December 10. However, the association came to an abrupt end just days before the inaugural Indy NXT season race in St. Petersburg.

Buck, an esteemed figure in motor racing, stepped into the shoes of Levi Jones, the man credited for steering Penske’s resurgence of the Indy NXT series through 2024. Buck’s stint, though brief, wasn’t without controversy. Reports have surfaced of a widening rift between Buck and the NXT team owners, an issue insiders believe culminated in this unexpected change just days before the year’s first NXT event.

Penske Entertainment now faces the challenge of identifying a new NXT director. It is believed that the company has a substantial pool of candidates from their extensive search following Jones’ departure. This factor could prove instrumental in filling the void left by Buck’s premature exit.

In the interim, the reins of the series have been handed over to new IndyCar Series president Doug Boles and Jason Penix, the VP of event and track operations at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Penix, with his rich experience in a leadership role in Indy Lights, the precursor to NXT, is expected to provide a smooth transitional phase. Both Boles and Penix will reportedly be present at the St. Petersburg event, providing series oversight as part of their interim responsibilities.

Fortunately, the rest of the Indy NXT’s operations group remains unaltered, ensuring a degree of stability during this period of change. As the motor racing fraternity awaits the new NXT director’s appointment, Penske Entertainment’s decision underlines the importance they place on strong leadership and team dynamics. As the Indy NXT season takes off, the search for a new director promises to add an interesting subplot to the unfolding narrative.
