Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League will continue until the end.
Callum Ilott will compete in this year’s edition of the Indianapolis 500, marking his third participation in the race.
His entry completes the 34-car field for the prestigious IndyCar event, with one driver to be excluded during the qualifiers.
Following a preseason injury that prevented David Malukas from participating in any races, McLaren wasted no time in securing Ilott as his replacement. Ilott had already raced in place of Malukas at St. Petersburg and the non-points race at Thermal Club.
McLaren also confirmed that current F2 champion Theo Pourchaire will take over Malukas’ former car for the remainder of the IndyCar season after the Indy 500.
Ilott expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating: “It’s every driver’s dream to race in the Indianapolis 500, and I would like to thank Zak Brown, Gavin Ward, and Tony Kanaan for making this possible.” Ilott had already driven the #6 car during the open tests for the Indy 500 last month and is excited to continue racing with Arrow McLaren, a familiar team.
McLaren team principal Gavin Ward expressed confidence in Ilott’s abilities, stating: “Callum brings valuable experience with this team and at the Indy 500 as we enter the two most important weeks of our season. We believe Callum and the #6 team will be competitive during the qualifiers and on race day, just like our other cars.”
After the Indy 500, Ilott will return to his participation in the World Endurance Championship with a Porsche Hypercar from the Jota team. Ilott secured his first overall victory in the championship last weekend in Spa, alongside former Formula 1 driver Will Stevens.
Ilott’s previous experiences at the Indy 500 have been a mix of success and challenges. In his debut year in 2022, he impressed by qualifying in 19th place for Juncos Hollinger Racing’s first Indy 500 since 2019. However, he faced difficulties during the race and crashed.
The 2023 event was busier for Ilott. After facing a significant drivability issue during open tests, Ilott struggled to convince the team of the problem. However, Juncos eventually switched to the backup car, and Ilott comfortably qualified in 27th place. He then steadily moved up through the field and finished in 12th place, Juncos’ best result in seven Indy 500 appearances.
Ilott’s team is both his biggest asset and potential weakness. McLaren had a strong performance in last year’s race and believes they have two of the best cars. To secure victory, Ilott will have to overcome former winner Alexander Rossi, skilled Indy 500 driver Pato O’Ward, and highly regarded NASCAR Cup champion Kyle Larson. Additionally, Felix Rosenqvist, who drove car #6 last year, believed he had the best car before crashing, and O’Ward also had an accident while trying to pass eventual runner-up Marcus Ericsson.
If Ilott maintains his sensible approach in 2023, he has a good chance of achieving victory. If his availability for the 2024 season had been clear earlier, he could have secured a full-time seat in the IndyCar. However, disagreements between Ilott and Juncos arose during the Indy 500, leading to a mutual split. Despite this setback, Ilott has found success in sports car racing with Jota and may not need to return to IndyCar if he continues to perform well.
While Pourchaire has a full-time opportunity to impress McLaren for the rest of the year, Ilott remains a candidate for that seat and other seats in IndyCar. His performances over the past two years for a smaller team, including a front row qualifying in 2022 and two top-five finishes in 2023, will not be easily forgotten.
The teams and drivers participating in the Indy 500 are as follows:
AJ Foyt Racing: Santino Ferrucci, Sting Ray Robb
