Callum Ilott confirmed as a driver for Arrow McLaren in the upcoming Indianapolis 500. This move was widely expected by fans and experts. The team left the #6 seat open when they announced Theo Pourchaire for the rest of the season, and now they have filled that spot with Ilott. Earlier this year, Ilott had the opportunity to race for the team in some test sessions and the first race of the 2024 season in St. Pete, replacing the injured David Malukas. However, due to his commitments racing a full season of WEC with Jota, Ilott was only available for occasional roles in the IndyCar series this season. Ilott expressed his gratitude to Zak Brown, Gavin Ward, and Tony Kanaan for making this opportunity possible. He is excited to race in the Indianapolis 500 with a familiar car and team in Arrow McLaren. Despite the April open test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway being shortened due to weather, Ilott had productive runs and feels comfortable with the team. He is confident they can come together over the month of May and perform well on race day. The reason the #6 seat was open in the first place was because David Malukas was released from the team a few weeks ago. McLaren needed a more consistent arrangement for the rest of the season and decided to bring in rookie Pourchaire for all races except the Indy 500. Ilott’s experience will be valuable in ensuring a good result in the important race. Furthermore, Ilott brings momentum to the team after winning his race at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend. Team boss Gavin Ward believes Ilott’s experience with the team and at the Indy 500 will be valuable as they enter the two most important weeks of their season. He is confident that Ilott and the No. 6 NTT DATA Chevy team will compete near the top of the grid during qualifying sessions and on race day, just like the other team cars. Ilott will participate in all practice sessions and qualifying rounds over the next two weeks and will race in his third Indy 500 on May 26.
