Iconic Track Walk Returns to Australian Grand Prix 2025: New Safety Measures Ensuring Fans’ Security

The Australian Grand Prix is set to re-establish a beloved tradition, the ‘Track Walk’, after a hiatus in the wake of a severe security breach in 2023. The incident had resulted in a hefty fine of €120,000 imposed on the event’s organisers for failing to prevent unauthorised fan access to the racing circuit.

The incident occurred during the 2023 Grand Prix when spectators managed to bypass security barriers and climb fences while cars were still on the track. The climax arrived as a handful of fans nearly reached Nico Hulkenberg’s damaged Haas after a chaotic race, punctuated by a third red-flag stoppage and an absurd final lap behind the Safety Car.

The Australian Grand Prix executives were found guilty of violating Article 12.2.1.h of the International Sporting Code. The article mandates reasonable measures to prevent any unsafe act that can lead to potentially hazardous situations. The fallout from the incident led to the suspension of the Track Walk for the following year’s race in 2024, denying fans the privilege of stepping onto the track.

Fast forward to 2025, and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation is all set to resurrect this much-loved tradition. Travis Auld, the Corporation’s chief, expressed his delight at bringing back the Track Walk, terming it a cherished experience for fans. He hopes that the fervent supporters will get a chance to celebrate an Australian driver’s victory this time around.

To avoid any safety mishaps akin to 2023, the organisers have put in place stringent security measures. This includes the installation of ten purpose-built barrier gates to regulate access to the track. In addition, there will be a significant increase in security personnel to ensure the event proceeds without a hitch.

Steve Dimopoulos, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, lauded the return of the Track Walk. He stressed the importance of the Grand Prix to Melbourne, highlighting how the event creates thousands of jobs while boosting local businesses like hotels, cafes, and attractions.

In a significant change to the schedule, the Australian Grand Prix will kick off the racing calendar this year, with the event set to take place between 14-16 March. Fans worldwide will eagerly await the return of the Track Walk, hoping for a weekend filled with thrilling races and safe celebrations.
