Mir: ‘Estou incerto de quanto tempo mais meu corpo pode resistir ao desafiante Honda’

Joan Mir, member of the Repsol Honda team, has faced continuous challenges during the French Grand Prix, leading him to question the physical impact it is having on his body. Despite the new MotoGP concessions system providing additional advantages, Honda continues to struggle at the back of the grid. Mir has yet to finish above 12th place in the first five races of the 2024 season, making him the highest-ranked Honda rider in the championship. Mir’s teammate, Luca Marini, also faces difficulties as he has not scored a single point in the campaign.

Mir openly admitted that he is uncertain about the timeline to resolve Honda’s issues, despite highlighting them after the Jerez test in April. The team has made no significant changes to the bike since the start of the season, resulting in Mir’s constant complaints about specific areas of concern. He expressed hope for a reaction and the introduction of improvements in the indicated direction. However, Mir acknowledged that he does not know how long it will take to see tangible changes.

Having spent his second year with Honda, Mir’s tenure has been marked by numerous accidents due to the bike’s uncompetitive nature. As the 2020 world champion, he has had to constantly push the limits without much to gain. Mir now worries about the impact this is having on his body, but he cannot predict how long he can endure the situation. Despite his efforts to perform at his best and stay ahead of his competitors, Mir recognizes that waiting for miracles is unrealistic.

Mir acknowledges that he and several other riders, such as Jorge Lorenzo, Pol Espargaro, and Alex Rins, have had negative results after their time with Honda. However, he remains optimistic that a competitive package can reverse his fortunes.

He states: “It is a fact that anyone who has left Honda in recent years has not performed better than when they entered. There are no exceptions. We must face this situation in the best way possible and evaluate our options. That is the challenge.”

Mir firmly believes that, despite potential limitations, they will still have options available. He expresses: “Maybe not the ones I wish for, but options nonetheless. We are still moving forward and I am confident that, with a competitive bike, we will quickly find ourselves at the forefront.”

Despite the difficulties of the bike compared to its competitors in 2024, the 26-year-old rider feels more accustomed to his current circumstances, and his performances on the track support this claim.

He explains: “I am calm now. Last year, I admit that the situation overwhelmed me and I was not performing at my maximum potential. Surprisingly, this year’s bike is even worse, but I have been riding faster.”

Mir emphasizes that he is in a better mental and physical state, and he realizes that the limitations he faces are not a reflection of his abilities. In contrast, he admits: “Last year, I had doubts and couldn’t reach the expected performance level.”
