Hyundai’s Uncertain Future in World Rally Championship Revealed!

Hyundai’s potential exit from the World Rally Championship (WRC) is causing a stir in the motorsport world as the brand’s participation beyond this year remains uncertain. Despite Hyundai’s successful factory WRC program since 2014, the team’s future in the championship is up in the air. Speculations are rife that Rally2 could become the top WRC class next year if Hyundai decides to bow out at the end of the season.

Hyundai boss Cyril Abiteboul has shed light on the brand’s dilemma, expressing more optimism about the team’s involvement in 2026 than in 2027. Concerns have been raised over the 2027 WRC technical regulations, which aim to attract more teams and manufacturers by implementing a cost cap and allowing for diverse vehicle bodywork.

Abiteboul highlighted worries about the regulations not showcasing relevant technology or making the cars exciting enough for fans and manufacturers. With the championship’s promoter currently undergoing a sale process, there is also uncertainty about the future promotion of WRC, adding another layer of complexity to Hyundai’s decision-making process.

Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Hyundai has not ruled out the possibility of participating in the WRC in 2028 or even late 2027. The team is awaiting clarity on crucial aspects such as long-term promoter commitment and the alignment of technical regulations with the future landscape of automotive technology.

As Hyundai navigates the intricate web of factors influencing its WRC future, the motorsport community eagerly awaits a resolution that will shape the upcoming seasons of the championship.
