Hyundai Caught Off Guard in WRC Canary Islands Showdown!

Hyundai’s devastating defeat at Rally Islas Canarias has left Ott Tanak pointing fingers at the team’s lack of preparation for the challenging event. The World Rally Championship saw Toyota clinch a remarkable 1-2-3-4 victory, leaving Hyundai in the dust. Hyundai’s confidence was shattered as they underestimated the demands of the first pure asphalt race of the 2025 WRC season. Despite a strong showing by Thierry Neuville in Rally Sierra Morena, Hyundai faltered in the Canary Islands, struggling with car setup and tire performance.

The team’s inability to optimize the Hankook hard compound tires and the sealed differential components proved to be major obstacles. Hyundai’s upgraded i20 N Rally1 car was also put to the test, revealing fundamental issues that need addressing. With Saturday and Sunday stages essentially becoming a testing ground, Hyundai’s shortcomings were glaring. Adrien Fourmaux emerged as the top-performing Hyundai driver, albeit finishing fifth, over two and a half minutes behind the leader, Kalle Rovanpera.

Tanak acknowledged the team’s lack of readiness, emphasizing the stark contrast in performance between Hyundai and Toyota. The Estonian driver expressed uncertainties about how to bridge the gap and match Toyota’s dominance. Despite the disappointment, Fourmaux remains optimistic about Hyundai’s ability to bounce back. He believes the team will learn from their mistakes and make necessary improvements before the Central European Rally in October.

While the Canary Islands debacle was disheartening for Hyundai, the team is determined to regroup and come back stronger. With lessons learned from this humbling experience, Hyundai is gearing up to tackle future challenges with resilience. The setback in the Canary Islands serves as a wake-up call for Hyundai, pushing them to reevaluate their strategies and enhance their performance on all terrains.
