Hyundai Recalls Genesis GV60 and GV80 for Incorrect Rearview Camera Software

In a surprising turn of events, Hyundai Motor Company has discovered a troubling issue with its luxury SUVs. The problem occurs when the infotainment unit fails to fully initialize and the vehicle is put into reverse at speeds exceeding 6 miles per hour (10 kilometers per hour). While this situation is unlikely to occur frequently, it has been reported by a small number of dealers and owners.

Hyundai Motor America began investigating this matter on June 12, 2024. The following month, they received video evidence showcasing the issue. The footage displayed a GV80 model at a processing center, where it switched to a different screen while in reverse and traveling at speeds higher than 6 mph.

Upon reviewing production data, Hyundai determined that a total of 1,488 vehicles in the US market were potentially affected. Specifically, there were 477 units of the 2025 Genesis GV80 and 1,011 units of the 2024 through 2025 Genesis GV60. Both of these models are manufactured at Hyundai’s flagship assembly plant in South Korea.

Interestingly, the touchscreen infotainment system at the center of this problem is sourced from LG Electronics, a South Korea-based company. Thankfully, Hyundai Motor America has not received any reports of accidents, injuries, or other serious incidents related to this issue.

According to documents published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the production dates for the recalled GV80 and GV60 SUVs were between March 11, 2024, and June 11, 2024, as well as between July 22, 2023, and June 26, 2024. Dealers will be notified electronically by October 5, and owner notification letters will be sent out on the same day.

To rectify the problem, dealers will perform a software update that improves the rearview camera logic. This updated software was introduced to GV80 and GV60 production on June 12 and July 2, respectively. In the meantime, owners can easily check if their vehicles are affected by entering the 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on either the NHTSA’s website or the Genesis website.

The GV80 is a luxurious mid-size SUV built on a rear-biased platform. It received a refresh for the 2024 model year in September 2023. The starting price for this flagship SUV is $57,700 for the four-cylinder engine variant, while the six-cylinder model costs $73,800. Both engines are turbocharged. Notably, the GV80 is only available with all-wheel drive, resulting in fuel economy ratings of 21 miles per gallon (11.2 liters per 100 kilometers) in the combined test cycle.

As for the upcoming 2025 Genesis GV60, it will be rear-wheel drive by default and offer all-wheel drive as an option. Unfortunately, EPA estimates for the 2025 model year are not yet available. However, it is worth mentioning that the rear-wheel drive GV60 is expected to achieve a range of 294 miles (473 kilometers) on a full charge. The most affordable version of the GV60, the Standard RWD, is priced at $52,350.

With the recall process underway and the necessary updates being implemented, Hyundai is taking proactive steps to address this issue and ensure the safety and satisfaction of its customers.
