Hyundai Motorsport’s president, Cyril Abiteboul, has revealed that Hyundai has been participating in the WRC since 2014. However, there has been increasing speculation about the team’s future, particularly regarding the development of a race car for Le Mans, which is believed to be already underway at their German headquarters.
When asked about the plans for a Le Mans car, Abiteboul responded by stating that he has not confirmed any of the rumors. He acknowledged the widespread speculation and mentioned that they have been exploring various options. However, he did confirm that Hyundai Motorsport will be participating in the WRC next year. As for the rest of the details, Abiteboul expressed his inability to disclose further information at this time.
Abiteboul emphasized that it is possible for Hyundai to undertake multiple programs simultaneously. Therefore, the introduction of a Le Mans program would not necessarily mean the end of their involvement in the WRC. He assured that the answers to these questions will be revealed in due course.
Regarding Hyundai’s commitment to the WRC until 2026, Abiteboul clarified that he is responsible for executing a strategy determined by higher-level decision-makers. He reports to various individuals, including the CEO, chairman, head of brand, and N brand. These key figures are involved in the decision-making process, and it is their prerogative to announce Hyundai’s plans. Abiteboul stated that the official announcement will be made after the summer break, most likely from Hyundai’s headquarters in Seoul.
