To convince Americans that autonomous vehicles are safe, Hyundai took the Ioniq 5 robotaxi to take a driving test.
The newly revealed film shows the Ioniq 5 robotaxi successfully completing a process similar to a real driving test in the US.
Created by the South Korean manufacturer to illustrate the safety and reliability of the autonomous driving technology of the robotaxi, the film depicts a series of driving tests, including road driving in Las Vegas, USA, carried out by the autonomous driving model.
In the driving test conducted by Kandice Jones, an experienced American professional examiner, the Ioniq 5 robotaxi stood out for its speed control, lane changes, maneuvers performed, ability to stop accurately at a “STOP” sign, make left turns, and react quickly to dangers encountered.
Despite her initial doubts, the demanding examiner was ultimately impressed and awarded the Ioniq 5 robotaxi with a driver’s license. “Surprisingly, it was a perfect score. I’m impressed,” admitted Kandice Jones.
The film also highlights the importance of autonomous driving, recounting the case of Pearl Outlaw, an American woman with visual impairment, and her mother, Ruth. Pearl faces mobility limitations due to her disease, called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which prevents her from obtaining a driver’s license – an essential symbol of independence and freedom for many people. Pearl’s story underscores the daily mobility challenges faced by citizens with physical disabilities, emphasizing the importance of autonomous driving technology in providing independence. Remember that the Ioniq 5 robotaxi was developed by Hyundai in collaboration with Motional. The two companies have been working together for several years to develop and test autonomous vehicles on public roads in Nevada, California, and other locations in the United States. At the end of 2023, the two companies inaugurated an innovation center in Singapore and announced that the first production models of the Ioniq 5 robotaxi will be produced at that innovation unit.
