According to statistics, over 60% of car owners face difficulties when trying to clean their engine themselves. One of the easiest and most effective ways to tackle this task is by using degreasers. In this article, we will look at how to properly wash a car engine and use degreasers for surface preparation.

How to clean a car engine

The car engine is one of the most challenging parts to clean. Therefore, many people prefer to entrust this task to professionals. However, to save money, you can do it yourself. Regularly cleaning the engine every one or two years helps keep it in good condition and makes future cleanings much easier, complete guide on how to wash a car engine.

Preparation

Before starting, it is necessary to gather the necessary products and tools. One of the main products is a degreaser. There are two types of degreasers: solvent-based and water-based. Solvent-based automotive degreasers are considered the most effective as they quickly penetrate layers of dirt and act faster. However, due to their strong odor, it is recommended to use them outdoors. If this is not possible, it is preferable to opt for a water-based degreaser.

In addition to the degreaser, you will need:

It is preferable to choose a mild day, without high humidity or strong winds for cleaning, so that the engine and its components dry more quickly. Let the engine cool completely before starting work to avoid burns and damage due to sudden changes in water temperature on hot parts.

Preparation of the engine compartment

Open the engine compartment lid and check if it is properly closed. Remove all dirt, such as leaves and branches, with a soft brush or by hand. You can also use a car vacuum cleaner or an air compressor. Make sure to seal all electronic connections, such as the battery, ignition cables, and engine control unit, with sealed bags or plastic film. This will prevent contact with water and protect components from damage. Remove the air filter to prevent water from entering the engine. If you are skilled and have the right tools, remove the battery. Otherwise, just disconnect it to deactivate all electronic components and prevent short circuits.

Application of degreaser

First, rinse the engine with water from a hose or a high-pressure washing machine to remove surface dirt. Do not use too much pressure to avoid damaging the parts. Apply degreaser to the engine, especially in areas with heavy contamination, such as covers and pipes. Follow the degreaser application instructions to avoid damage. After waiting the specified time in the instructions, use a synthetic bristle brush to clean the engine. If necessary, repeat the degreaser application.

Removing the degreaser

Rinse the engine again with water to remove all the degreaser. Make sure to rinse the product well from all parts to avoid damage. Be careful not to let water come into contact with electrical components.

Drying the engine

To avoid water stains, it is important to dry the engine well. You can let it air dry or use a clean microfiber cloth. If you have compressed air, use it to dry the corners and hard-to-reach areas. Once completely dry, remove the plastic protection and reconnect all electrical connections.

Benefits of cleaning the car engine

A clean car engine is less likely to overheat because the cooling system works more efficiently. Engine maintenance becomes easier and it is easier to visually detect leaks, cracks, and other damage. Regular cleaning prevents corrosion of components and other damage caused by dirt.

Using degreasers to prepare surfaces

Degreasers are essential for preparing surfaces before painting, applying primer, gluing, or sealing. They effectively remove oil and asphalt stains, improving adhesion and ensuring an even distribution of the coating.

Types of degreasers:

  1. Based on organic solvents. These degreasers are inexpensive and suitable for removing asphalt stains, machine oil, mastic, natural rubber, and silicone. They evaporate quickly, but are toxic and fire hazardous, so caution is necessary when using them.
  2. Water-based. These degreasers have excellent anti-static properties and can remove the toughest stains, including rust. They are safe and harmless, suitable for plastic surfaces, and effectively clean ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  3. Based on emulsions of organic solvents. These products have excellent penetration capacity, preventing surface re-pollution with oil particles. They are excellent at removing soot and oxide films, but are characterized by a high price.

Specifics of using degreasers

  • Read the instructions carefully and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. Make sure the product is compatible with the material you are treating. For example, degreasers based on trichlorofluoromethane become explosive when in contact with aluminum and become sticky when in contact with water.
  • When using solvent-based degreasers, work in a well-ventilated area, wearing protective clothing, safety goggles, and a respirator. Avoid spraying near open flames.
  • Use a sprayer or a lint-free cloth to evenly distribute the degreaser.
  • Do not let the chemical product dry completely. Remove residues after spraying with a lint-free cloth.
  • After treating the surface, avoid touching it to prevent recontamination.

Cleaning quality control

To check the cleaning quality, place a clean piece of paper on the treated surface. If oil stains appear on the paper, the surface has not been cleaned sufficiently and should be treated again.

According to an automotive expert, the correct use of degreasers and regular engine cleaning significantly prolong the life of the car and improve its performance. Following the recommendations for choosing and using degreasers, as well as for regular engine cleaning, can help you avoid serious breakdowns and keep your car in the best condition. By following these simple tips, you can extend the lifespan of your vehicle and keep it running reliably.
