Horse Powertrain, a leader in innovative low-emission transmission systems, announced that it will present its Horse C15 family, a solution of ultracompact range extender technologies at the Munich show, which will take place next week.
The Horse C15 system integrates an engine, a generator, and an inverter into a compact unit that is small enough to be installed in existing 100% electric vehicle platforms with little or no modification.
This solution, according to Horse, allows manufacturers to easily and efficiently convert a fully electric vehicle platform into a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), enabling them to expand their product lines to meet local market demand.
With a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and an integrated generator, inverter, and cooling package, the Horse C15 range extender can be installed horizontally or vertically, allowing the unit to be placed in the front or rear compartment of a 100% electric vehicle, providing flexibility in vehicle design.
The new system will be available in the natural aspiration version for vehicles in segments B and C, with a maximum engine power of up to 70 kW, as well as for larger vehicles in segment D and LCV, with the addition of a turbocharger that allows power to be increased to 120 kW. The new powertrain unit will be able to run on gasoline, ethanol, methanol, and synthetic fuels.
In all applications, the range extender maintains the high-voltage battery charge level, which is used to power the vehicle’s electric motor. The use of the Horse C15 allows for a reduction in the size of the electric vehicle’s battery, providing significant savings in terms of cost and weight, and reducing pressure on the critical mineral supply chain, all without affecting the range.
In contrast, in two plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) and two traditional hybrid vehicles (HEV), the combustion engine of a system with a range extender never directly drives the vehicle’s wheels; instead, the engine operates in its most efficient rotational range, minimizing fuel consumption and emissions, while reducing noise and vibration.
“Electric vehicles with extended range are a growing category in many global markets. Horse C15’s extended range solution provides a simple and cost-effective way to seize this opportunity to adapt your native platforms of 100% electric vehicles to extended range. We believe that the demand for this type of propulsion will continue to grow.”, said Matias Giannini, CEO of Horse Powertrain.
