Horner Debunks Engine Mode Accusations in Explosive Tsunoda FP1 Analysis

SUZUKA, JAPAN - APRIL 04: Christian Horner, Team Principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing talk in the garage prior to practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Japan at Suzuka Circuit on April 04, 2025 in Suzuka, Japan. Christian Horner shuts down rumors of Yuki Tsunoda’s engine being turned up during FP1 at the Japanese Grand Prix, as the young driver impresses in his Red Bull debut.

In a surprising move, Red Bull swapped Liam Lawson for Yuki Tsunoda ahead of the Suzuka race, a decision that seems to be paying off based on Tsunoda’s performance in FP1. Despite it being his first time behind the wheel of the RB21, Tsunoda managed to finish just a tenth behind Max Verstappen, showcasing his potential in the competitive world of Formula One.

When questioned about the possibility of Tsunoda having an advantage with his engine settings, Horner quickly dismissed the idea, stating that both drivers were on identical engine modes. He praised Tsunoda’s familiarity with the circuit and his clear and concise feedback, highlighting the young driver’s potential for growth and development within the team.

Horner also emphasized the importance of Tsunoda’s experience in F1, noting that he brings valuable knowledge to the team in what is shaping up to be a season focused on continuous development. The team principal hinted at potential differences in setups between Verstappen and Tsunoda, with the latter possibly opting for a more stable and predictable car over outright speed.

As Red Bull continues to shake up its driver lineup, all eyes are on Tsunoda as he aims to make his mark in the pinnacle of motorsport. With a strong start to the weekend, the young driver has already shown glimpses of his potential, leaving fans and pundits eager to see how he will fare in the remaining sessions.
