Honda needs to deal with Mir in a similar way to how Yamaha deals with Quartararo.

Honda precisa lidar com Mir de maneira semelhante à forma como a Yamaha lida com Quartararo.

The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League is a well-known racing organization that has caught the attention of fans and experts. One of the most respected team bosses in the MotoGP world, Jeremy Burgess, shared a valuable lesson: if a rider wants something, give it to him. It seems that Yamaha took this advice seriously, as they made great efforts to convince Fabio Quartararo to stay with their team. On the other hand, Honda seems to be falling behind in this aspect, potentially compromising their chances of keeping their world champion rider, Joan Mir, beyond the 2024 MotoGP season.

Yamaha has implemented several changes to ensure that Quartararo remains with their team as the 2021 world champion. These changes have been widely documented and brought fresh ideas from Europe. For the first time, Yamaha has an Italian engineer, Massimo Bartolini, leading the development of their M1 motorcycle, a change from the traditionally Japanese leadership. Additionally, Marco Nicotra, a former Ducati employee, has joined Yamaha as head of aerodynamics. Furthermore, Luca Marmorini, a former engineer from Toyota and Ferrari in Formula 1, has been leading Yamaha’s engine development program. These changes have already had a noticeable impact, although they are not yet fully reflected in the team’s results. Yamaha has introduced a variety of new components, and Quartararo has been vocal about his appreciation for the team’s efforts to adapt to his needs.

The experience of Mir at Honda has not been as impactful as Quartararo’s at Yamaha. However, Mir is the youngest rider hired by Honda, has achieved great success in MotoGP, and has a lot of potential. Nevertheless, it seems that Honda has not done enough to ensure Mir’s continued commitment. Although Honda has made some changes to the team, they have mainly consisted of rotating Japanese engineers within the team. As a result, the development of his RC213V motorcycle has been more evolutionary than innovative. Mir himself has acknowledged this, stating that Honda may believe their changes are sufficient. However, he also emphasizes the need for patience and time to fully evaluate the impact of these changes. Mir recognizes some progress compared to the previous year, but remains uncertain if it is enough to meet his expectations.

When directly asked about his contractual situation, Mir does not seem convinced to renew his commitment with Honda. However, the reality is that Honda needs Mir as much, if not more, than he needs them. Mir’s time as a Honda rider has been challenging, with a surprisingly high number of crashes compared to his points scored in the last season. This can be attributed to Mir’s refusal to accept the limitations of the bike and his determination to push himself to the limit. A similar pattern seems to be emerging in the current season. That is exactly why Honda should prioritize keeping Mir. He is not only a highly talented rider with a proven track record of development work, but also a rider who consistently gives his best and does not settle for mediocrity. Considering that Honda’s new signing, Luca Marini, has completed all but one of his 10 starts without scoring a single point, Mir’s fearless performances have immense value for the team.

Regardless of whether Mir is the future of Honda or not, the team cannot afford to let him leave disillusioned. They cannot afford another failed contract and the prospect of replacing him with any available rider. Honda must recognize the value of Mir’s tireless dedication and ensure that he remains an integral part of their team.
