Honda and Suzuki will join a group of manufacturers that includes Stellantis, Toyota, Ford, Mazda, and Subaru to pool their emissions in the European Union with Tesla in 2025 to avoid heavy fines.
According to a document released by the European Union, which “Reuters” had access to, the two Japanese companies are moving forward with joining the “emission pool” to meet the EU’s interim carbon reduction targets for 2025, known as CAFE standards, which could cost the automotive industry thousands of euros in fines.
It should be noted that this year, Europe’s overall emissions must decrease from 106.6 grams of CO2 per kilometer to 93.6 grams, and car manufacturers have specific individual targets to meet.
The European Commission announced in early March that it will flexibilize the targets for carbon dioxide emissions, with fines for the automotive industry for failing to meet emission reduction targets only being applicable from 2028.
