“High” Stakes in Vegas: Drivers Joke About Marijuana Smell Around the Circuit

In the midst of the glitz, glamour, and high-octane action of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, an unexpected talking point has emerged – the distinct smell of marijuana lingering around the circuit. Franco Colapinto and Sergio Perez didn’t hold back in addressing the issue, with Colapinto humorously suggesting that drivers might fail doping tests thanks to the ambient aroma.

A “Dope” Experience for Colapinto

Rookie driver Franco Colapinto brought the issue to light during practice sessions, joking about the unusual sensory experience of racing through the streets of Sin City:

“Yes, there was a smell of marijuana as we were driving. If they dope test the drivers now, I think we’ll all test positive.”

The comment sparked laughter, but it also underscored the unique challenges drivers are encountering at this flashy and unconventional Grand Prix. While F1 is used to loud fans and electrifying atmospheres, the added “aromatics” of Las Vegas seem to be a new twist.

Sergio Perez Joins the Conversation

Sergio Perez, ever candid, echoed Colapinto’s observations, albeit with less humor and more frustration:

“What is very noticeable around the circuit is the smell of marijuana throughout the night. I’m tired of it already. The amount is incredible.”

Perez’s comments reflect how pervasive the smell has been, with the Red Bull driver admitting it’s hard to escape as he focuses on the high-stakes race weekend.

The Vegas Vibes: A City That Never Sleeps (or Holds Back)

The Las Vegas Grand Prix is designed to embody everything Sin City stands for: glamour, excitement, and an electric atmosphere. With its debut last year deemed a smashing success, this second edition has only amplified the pizzazz. However, it’s also come with unique challenges: freezing temperatures, tricky grip conditions, and now, the unexpected “marijuana musk.”

The legalization of recreational marijuana in Nevada has made its presence a natural part of the city’s nightlife, and it appears the race circuit is no exception. For some fans, it’s just another facet of the party. For drivers, however, it’s a curious – and perhaps unwelcome – distraction.

Drivers Focus Despite Unusual Challenges

Beyond the unexpected scents, drivers have more pressing issues to contend with. Max Verstappen, championship leader and poised to clinch his fourth consecutive title, has already expressed frustration over grip issues on the icy-cold circuit. Teams are scrambling to fine-tune setups ahead of qualifying, knowing that every fraction of a second will count in the penultimate race of the season.

The Vegas Grand Prix: A Race Like No Other

The Las Vegas Grand Prix continues to live up to its reputation as a spectacle that blends motorsport with the larger-than-life energy of its host city. While drivers may grumble about the peculiar challenges, fans are reveling in the unique atmosphere that only Vegas can provide.

Whether it’s the icy track temperatures, the unpredictable grip, or the whiffs of marijuana drifting through the air, this race is proving to be one that drivers—and fans—won’t soon forget.
