Ahead of his next race at home, the Canadian Grand Prix, Villeneuve did not hold back when asked about his thoughts and analysis on the arrival of F1 in Montreal. Throughout the weekend, he also shared his opinions as a Sky F1 commentator. It is clear that one of his main targets was Ricciardo.
It is worth noting that Villeneuve’s comments questioning Ricciardo’s presence on the F1 grid seem to have had a positive effect on the VCARB driver. Despite the criticism, Ricciardo managed to qualify in P5 in Canada, leading Red Bull boss Christian Horner to see Villeneuve’s comments as a wake-up call for the driver.
After his impressive performance on Saturday, which was expected of him every race weekend, Ricciardo took the opportunity to mock the 1997 F1 World Champion. In a disrespectful response, he stated, “I think he’s hit his head a few times too many, I don’t know if he plays ice hockey or something.”
As expected, Villeneuve faced a barrage of abuse on social media from so-called “fans” of Ricciardo after his candid comments. It seems that his position on the grid depends more on generating “likes” and “views” for his team’s platforms than his actual performance on the track. Unfortunately, he lacks the speed, consistency, and necessary results when it really matters.
Herbert, a former Formula 1 champion turned commentator, shared his own thoughts on the dispute between Villeneuve and Ricciardo. He acknowledged Villeneuve’s comments and the way he expressed them, stating that he spoke the truth. However, Herbert believes that it’s time for Villeneuve to retire, even if many people may not agree. He emphasizes that performance is crucial and when it starts to decline, doubts arise.
According to Herbert, Ricciardo still believes in himself despite Villeneuve’s negativity. He suggests that Ricciardo may think, “Go take a hike. You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Herbert believes that Ricciardo is struggling mentally and is no longer the same driver he used to be. He points to his time at McLaren and being overshadowed by Lando Norris. Although Ricciardo has had some standout moments, they are not enough. Consistency is key, and that’s what drivers like Norris, Oscar, Max, Charlie, and Carlos are consistently achieving.
Herbert acknowledges Ricciardo’s skill, but believes that since his time at McLaren, his performances have been lacking. He doesn’t expect this to suddenly change for the better. Herbert cites Yuki as one of the standout drivers this year, with impressive results despite not having the fastest car on the grid. That’s why his team has decided to keep him for next year. Yuki’s strong performances in qualifying and improvement in race situations are commendable, according to Herbert.
When it comes to deciding when to retire as an F1 driver, Herbert expressed his thoughts on the matter. According to him, there comes a point in a driver’s career where they must reflect and question their ability to remain competitive. In Daniel’s case, Herbert hasn’t seen that competitive drive for some time, despite Daniel’s claims to the contrary.
Although Daniel has had some notable performances, such as his impressive display in Mexico last year, this has not translated into consistent success in subsequent races. This year, he had a strong race, but was unable to build on it. Daniel has not been able to take control of the situation and meet the high expectations that come with the sport. Herbert, drawing on his own experience, pointed out that there are other forms of motorsport, such as Indycar, Le Mans, and Touring Cars, that offer different opportunities.
Herbert, an Englishman who competed in 161 Grand Prix races, achieving seven podiums and three victories, also had success in endurance sports car racing, winning Le Mans with Mazda in 1991. (Quotes provided by Lord Ping)
