Dakar 2026: Henk Lategan Dominates Stage 4 with a Stunning Victory and Overall Lead
In a breathtaking display of skill and determination, Henk Lategan, the factory driver for Toyota, obliterated his competitors in the fourth stage of the Dakar Rally on Wednesday, clinching a monumental victory by a staggering seven minutes. The South African’s triumph in the grueling 417km marathon stage around the picturesque Al-Ula not only showcases his driving prowess but also propels him to the top of the overall standings, a position he fiercely reclaimed after a disappointing previous day.
Starting the day in pursuit of Dacia’s legendary racer, Sebastien Loeb, Lategan wasted no time in asserting his dominance. By the second checkpoint, he had surged ahead, establishing a commanding 46-second lead over the formidable Nasser Al-Attiyah. As the stage progressed, Lategan’s lead ballooned, particularly in the challenging middle sections where he expertly navigated past 11 rival vehicles, ultimately finishing with an impressive time that left others in the dust. This monumental margin marks the largest winning gap of the Dakar Rally 2026, solidifying Lategan’s position as a formidable contender for the title.
While five-time Dakar champion Al-Attiyah settled for a second-place finish, he could not close the gap to Lategan in the final stages, leaving Marek and Eryk Goczal, who raced in their customer Toyota Hiluxes, to secure third and fourth places, respectively. Loeb, despite a strong performance, found himself trailing Lategan by nearly 18 minutes, rounding out a challenging day for Dacia in fifth place.
The battle for supremacy was further highlighted by the performance of Energylandia’s Michal Goczal, who clocked in seventh, followed closely by the factory Toyotas of Toby Price and Saood Variawa. Century’s Mathieu Serradori managed to grab ninth place in his CR7, while American driver Seth Quintero ensured that seven Toyotas made it into the top 10.
In a shocking turn of events, the fortunes of Ford took a nosedive, as the American manufacturer struggled to keep pace with the leading pack. Mattias Ekstrom emerged as Ford’s best contender in 11th place, suffering a significant time loss of over 26 minutes. Fellow competitors Carlos Sainz Sr. and Nani Roma finished in 12th and 15th, respectively, with the young American Mitch Guthrie facing the most substantial setback after relinquishing a staggering 43 minutes.
The day also marked the premature withdrawal of reigning Dakar champion Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who had to bow out after 234km due to a series of debilitating punctures. Following a challenging start to the rally, which included a hefty 16-minute penalty for a waypoint infraction, Al-Rajhi prioritized his recovery over risking further injury. “My back injuries had healed sufficiently before the Dakar Rally, but not completely. Jeopardizing this healing process without a chance of a top result didn’t feel right. Therefore, complete recovery is now the top priority,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of health over competition.
Lategan’s remarkable performance has dramatically reshuffled the general classification, granting him a 3m55s lead over Al-Attiyah, who now occupies second place. Ekstrom stands as Ford’s highest-placed driver, with Sainz, Serradori, and Toyota’s Variawa and Goczal rounding out the top spots. As the competitors prepare for the next stage from Al-Ula to Hail, the stakes have never been higher, with no external assistance allowed overnight due to the marathon rules.
With the tension mounting and rivalries intensifying, all eyes will be on Lategan as he seeks to maintain his lead in the upcoming stages of this extraordinary rally. The world watches with bated breath—who will emerge victorious in the ultimate test of endurance and skill?
