Hendrick Motorsports Pit Crew Changes: Larson’s Team Faces Suspensions after Wheel Debacle at COTA

In what can only be termed a major pitfall for Kyle Larson’s team, two key members of his pit crew have been handed suspensions following a lost wheel incident at the Circuit of The Americas. Brandon Johnson, the team’s jackman, and Blaine Anderson, the front tire changer, have both been side-lined for the next two Cup Series events taking place at Phoenix Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The misfortune unfolded on the 44th lap of the race when Larson’s right-front wheel detached after a pit stop. This mishap triggered a chain of events that culminated in Larson being held for two laps, ultimately finishing a disappointing 32nd at the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix.

This suspension is a direct consequence of the new penalty guidelines formulated by NASCAR before the 2023 season kicked off. According to the revised rules, any car losing a wheel while on pit road under the yellow flag will have the driver restarting the race from the rear. If the wheel comes off while the green flag is up, the driver bears the brunt with a pass-through penalty. In the most severe scenario, if the wheel detaches beyond the pit road, the team faces a two-lap penalty, and two crew members face a suspension of two races. Larson’s penalty, unfortunately, fell under this last, most severe category.

In the wake of this suspension, Hendrick Motorsports has had to make quick substitutions. Eric Ludwig will step in as Larson’s jackman and Jafar Hall will fill in as the tire changer for the forthcoming Phoenix event. Both Ludwig and Hall are being pulled from Justin Haley’s No. 7 car team, another testament to Hendrick Motorsports’ resourceful collaborations with Spire Motorsports.

This suspension will unquestionably test the team’s resilience and adaptability, but as they say in racing, the show must go on. The real challenge now for Larson and his team will be to navigate the next two races without the familiar faces of Johnson and Anderson in the pit.
