Helmut Marko’s departure raises urgent questions: will Max Verstappen leave Red Bull too?

Helmut Marko’s Departure: What Does It Mean for Max Verstappen’s Future with Red Bull?

In a shocking turn of events, Helmut Marko has officially announced his exit from Red Bull Racing after an astounding two-decade tenure as the motorsport advisor. This raises a burning question: What does this mean for the future of superstar driver Max Verstappen, who has become synonymous with Red Bull’s success?

Marko, who has been at the helm of nurturing talent and guiding drivers into the world of Formula 1, has seen two of his protégés, Sebastian Vettel and Verstappen, ascend to world champion status. His departure could potentially shake the very foundation of Red Bull Racing, particularly considering the close relationship he shares with Verstappen.

Verstappen’s contract is a hot topic of discussion, set to expire in 2028. However, whispers of uncertainty have circulated regarding his long-term commitment to the team. In a dramatic twist earlier this year, Verstappen made headlines when he declared that if Marko were to leave, he would follow suit—a bold statement that underscores the deep bond between the two.

Adding fuel to the fire, Verstappen’s contract includes an exit clause, which allows him to leave if he is not in a top tier position in the championship—a condition he met in 2025. But Marko’s recent comments suggest that Verstappen is not currently considering an exit. “No. Max not only wants to succeed, but he wants to succeed in a harmonious environment,” Marko stated when asked if Verstappen’s future was in jeopardy.

The Austrian legend, now 71, further elaborated, indicating that Verstappen’s drive is still burning bright. “When he doesn’t have that anymore, he stops from one day to the next. But he is still far too young for that,” he affirmed, echoing confidence in the young champion’s commitment to the team.

Marko also shared insights into Verstappen’s emotional response to his resignation, hinting at an unexpected sense of sadness from the Dutch driver. “I would say that he was already a little sad about it,” he revealed. The two shared a reflective moment, reminiscing about their remarkable journey together. “We were there with great enthusiasm and commitment, and that is why it was a huge disappointment when it did not work,” Marko lamented, referring to their near miss in the championship.

As the dust settles on Marko’s departure, the implications for Verstappen and the Red Bull team remain to be seen. Will the 71-time grand prix winner stay loyal, or will the winds of change compel him to seek new horizons? Only time will tell. One thing is certain—Formula 1 fans will be on the edge of their seats, eager to see how this unfolding drama impacts the future of both Red Bull and its star driver. Stay tuned as we keep you updated on this thrilling saga!
