Helmut Marko’s Brutal Five-Word Verdict on Jack Doohan’s F1 Debut: ‘There Should Have Been More’

Can Jack Doohan Forge a New Trail in F1 with Alpine?

Jack Doohan’s Formula 1 debut at the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has left the paddock divided, with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko delivering a blunt assessment of the 21-year-old’s performance. While Alpine’s newly-promoted Australian driver capped off his first race in P15, the low-key debut raised questions about his readiness to shine in motorsport’s elite category.

A Quiet Arrival Amid High Expectations

Doohan’s F1 debut came under subdued circumstances. Unlike the fanfare often associated with rookie debuts, Alpine opted for a reserved approach, focusing on a clean transition rather than hype. The team’s recent acquisition of Franco Colapinto from Williams for a substantial fee suggested the Australian had a safety net if his debut faltered.

Doohan’s junior career earned him the nod for a promotion, but it came with tempered expectations. Despite strong performances, he has yet to claim a championship title—a glaring detail in a sport that demands consistent excellence.

Marko’s No-Nonsense Appraisal

Helmut Marko, never one to mince words, made his feelings about Doohan’s debut crystal clear: “There should have been more.” The Red Bull advisor’s curt evaluation underscores the unforgiving nature of Formula 1, where even rookies are expected to make an immediate impact.

Doohan’s qualifying performance didn’t help his case, as he started from the back of the grid. Despite Alpine’s improved pace throughout 2024, he struggled to capitalize, finishing outside the points.

Briatore’s Warning: Perform or Perish

Alpine Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore added fuel to the fire, outlining a cutthroat approach to evaluating driver performances. In an ominous statement, he assured fans that Alpine would “start the year with Pierre and Jack,” but hinted that driver changes could follow if results didn’t meet expectations.

“The only thing we can be sure of is death,” Briatore said. “If there’s a driver who isn’t making progress or bringing results, I change him. You can’t be emotional in F1.”

With Briatore’s reputation for swift decision-making, Doohan will face immense pressure to perform in the 2025 season or risk being replaced.

A Stronger Alpine Raises the Stakes

Alpine’s resurgence in 2024, including double podiums and consistent points finishes, has elevated expectations. The team’s newfound form leaves little room for underperformance, especially as rookies like Doohan enter a competitive field stacked with seasoned veterans.

Doohan’s task is clear: adapt quickly, deliver results, and demonstrate the consistency that earned him a shot in Formula 1. But with Colapinto waiting in the wings and Briatore’s no-nonsense approach looming, the Australian’s margin for error is razor-thin.

What’s Next for Jack Doohan?

Doohan’s debut may not have met expectations, but the story is far from over. With the backing of Alpine and a full season ahead, the young driver has time to grow into his role. However, the pressure to succeed will only intensify as Alpine looks to capitalize on its improved pace and compete with the midfield heavyweights.

The 2025 season will be a defining chapter for Doohan’s career. As Helmut Marko and Flavio Briatore watch closely, the Australian must rise to the challenge—or risk being the latest rookie casualty in Formula 1’s unforgiving environment.
