Helmut Marko Reveals the Tragic Turning Point That Cemented Max Verstappen as Red Bull’s Team Leader

Max Verstappen’s rise to Formula 1 greatness, capped off by his fourth consecutive world championship in 2024, owes much to a defining and somber moment in Red Bull Racing’s history. Dr. Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s sharp-tongued motorsport advisor, has opened up about how the untimely death of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022 reshaped the team and elevated Verstappen into a leadership role.

The Tragic Catalyst: Mateschitz’s Death

Dietrich Mateschitz, the visionary behind Red Bull’s foray into Formula 1, passed away in October 2022, leaving an irreplaceable void at the heart of the team. The Austrian billionaire was not just a founder but a passionate figurehead who inspired the team’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

Marko described the emotional and structural turmoil that followed Mateschitz’s death, calling it a “vacuum” within the organization. At a time when the team could have faltered, Verstappen stepped into an unexpected role: team leader.

“He developed a strong personality on top of it and was a leader in this difficult situation which came after the death of Mr. Mateschitz,” Marko explained.

Verstappen: More Than Just Speed

Verstappen, known for his fiery nature on the track, revealed a more composed and strategic side during this transitional period. The Dutchman not only brought raw speed but also a calm, calculated approach that helped Red Bull navigate through the storm.

Marko lauded Verstappen for his ability to make the most out of a car that wasn’t always the class of the field in 2024.

“He won races when the car was not so good and it was important to finish 5th or 6th, which he did. So he was using his speed but also his brain,” Marko said.

This year, Verstappen’s consistency—whether dominating from the front or salvaging critical points—has been pivotal in securing yet another Drivers’ Championship for the Milton Keynes-based team.

Keeping Red Bull Together

While Mateschitz’s absence was deeply felt, the team’s resolve to honor his legacy became a rallying cry. Marko recalled how Red Bull galvanized around a shared mission:

“There was a vacuum, but in the end, we stuck together and said, ‘We have to win this championship, so let’s work together.’”

The results speak volumes. Despite facing stiff competition and a car that at times lagged behind rivals, Verstappen’s leadership and on-track brilliance ensured Red Bull continued its dominance.

Verstappen’s Legacy and the Road Ahead

At just 27 years old, Verstappen has already etched his name among Formula 1’s all-time greats. His evolution from a raw talent to a composed leader has been instrumental in Red Bull’s continued success.

As he looks to close the 2024 season on a high, Verstappen’s journey underscores not just his racing prowess but his ability to inspire and lead a team through its darkest moments.

With two races left, Verstappen’s focus is clear: end the campaign strongly and prepare to lead Red Bull into yet another challenging season. As Marko succinctly put it, Verstappen is no longer just a driver—he is the heart of Red Bull Racing.
