Helmut Marko ignores Lando Norris to describe Oscar Pastri as the ‘mentally tougher driver’ at McLaren

Marko criticizes Perez’s ‘total breakdown’ at F1 Belgian Grand Prix.

McLaren started to establish themselves as one of the most dominant teams on the grid during the middle of the 2024 season. Despite only securing two race wins thus far, their chassis performance has been impressive. Additionally, McLaren’s young lineup makes them a formidable presence on the track. Therefore, during the ongoing summer break, Helmut Marko has chosen his preferred driver from McLaren.

Lando Norris achieved his first Formula 1 victory during the current campaign and has accumulated significant points in the championship standings. The British driver is in close contention for the top spot. However, this improvement in performance was insufficient to convince Dr. Helmut Marko to prioritize Norris over his Australian counterpart, Oscar Piastri.

Marko believes that Piastri displayed greater mental strength while partnering with Norris at McLaren. Furthermore, the 81-year-old noted that the Australian driver was rapidly catching up to his British teammate in terms of performance. Consequently, Piastri’s lack of mistakes convinced Marko to support him.

Despite the team’s strategic failures during race weekends, Lando Norris has consistently delivered impressive performances. However, the 24-year-old driver is not quick to forgive himself for the mistakes he makes during races. As a result, the Belgian Grand Prix witnessed a tumultuous performance from Norris, for which he partially blamed himself.

Therefore, it is evident that Norris faces significant pressure to catch up to Max Verstappen as he continues to be self-critical of his Formula 1 performances.

McLaren will continue to introduce upgrades to their package in order to narrow the gap with Red Bull. Towards the end of the 2024 season, Woking has a realistic chance of surpassing Milton Keynes in the Constructors Championship. Consequently, all hopes are pinned on the Austrian constructor to gradually close the distance to their rivals throughout the season.
