The 2024 Formula 1 season has seen intense competition between Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, with only 19 points separating them in the standings. Amidst recent speculation that Red Bull might be eyeing Russell for a potential 2026 switch, Helmut Marko has added fuel to the fire, expressing high praise for Russell’s performance.
Christian Horner’s apparent interest in Russell sparked a wave of criticism from Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who accused Horner of stirring up controversy. However, Marko has backed Horner’s comments, acknowledging Russell’s impressive pace this season compared to his veteran teammate Hamilton. Marko specifically highlighted Russell’s superior qualifying performances, suggesting that the young Briton may have an edge over the seven-time world champion.
“George Russell is as fast as, if not faster than, Hamilton in qualifying,” Marko stated. “But George Russell is tied to the Mercedes brand.”
While Marko’s remarks suggest admiration for Russell’s talent, he was quick to downplay the likelihood of Red Bull making a move, emphasizing that Russell is deeply linked to Mercedes. Instead, Marko reiterated Red Bull’s commitment to nurturing its own junior talent, including rising star Franco Colapinto, who has made waves in his Formula 1 debut.
“I think for now we will focus on our juniors,” Marko continued. “Franco Colapinto has done an incredible job. Now, we are going to see what our juniors can do.”
Mercedes’ 2024 season has been a rollercoaster, with the team securing three wins despite facing stiff competition, particularly from a resurgent McLaren. With Hamilton set to leave Mercedes at the end of the season, pairing Russell with a potential new teammate could bring even more intrigue in 2025. Red Bull’s apparent interest in Russell adds an extra layer of drama, setting the stage for a fascinating battle both on and off the track in the coming seasons.
