In a dramatic twist that epitomizes the high-stakes world of Formula 1, Red Bull Racing has confirmed the rumors of a million-dollar severance payout to Sergio Perez following his tumultuous exit at the end of the 2024 season. Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s no-nonsense advisor, revealed the details of the arrangement, underscoring the mutual agreement that marked the end of Perez’s stint with the Milton Keynes-based team.

Perez’s Rocky Red Bull Journey Comes to an End

After a season riddled with struggles, Perez parted ways with Red Bull, despite holding a multi-year contract extension. The Mexican driver, once heralded as a vital team player, found himself in a performance slump that saw him fall far behind his teammate Max Verstappen. Perez scored two wins in 2023 but failed to regain his competitive edge in 2024, prompting whispers of his impending departure mid-season.

Those whispers became reality when Red Bull and Perez agreed to part ways. However, not before Perez negotiated a million-dollar severance deal, ensuring he left the team with a financial cushion.
“We have found a mutually acceptable agreement,” Marko confirmed. “Yes, we are in Formula 1.”

The Performance Gap That Sealed Perez’s Fate

Despite his early promise with Red Bull, Perez’s inability to keep pace with Verstappen ultimately sealed his fate. While Verstappen shattered records with 19 wins in a single season, Perez struggled to maintain consistency. Marko reflected on the driver’s departure, acknowledging that Perez couldn’t rediscover his form in Red Bull’s high-pressure environment.
“He has always hoped to find the lost form, but it has not happened,” Marko explained. “And he recognized that it was not possible for him to rise again in this environment, and therefore, separation was best.”

What’s Next for Sergio Perez?

As Perez steps away from the Red Bull cockpit, speculation about his future abounds. The 34-year-old may consider a return to Formula 1 in 2026 with the newly approved General Motors-Cadillac team, which will join the grid under the sport’s evolving regulations. However, Perez could also choose to pivot toward other endeavors, leaving F1 behind to focus on life beyond the track.

Regardless of his next move, Perez leaves a legacy at Red Bull as one of the most dependable team players in Milton Keynes. From his memorable victories to his pivotal support during Verstappen’s championship runs, Perez’s contributions won’t soon be forgotten.

Red Bull’s New Era Begins

Meanwhile, Red Bull is gearing up for a new chapter in 2025, with massive personnel changes reshaping the team. The focus now shifts to their latest recruit, who will face the monumental task of maintaining Red Bull’s competitive edge. With Verstappen continuing to lead the charge, the team enters the upcoming season determined to reclaim their dominance and stay ahead of rivals like McLaren.

A Closing Chapter in Perez’s F1 Story

Sergio Perez’s departure from Red Bull may mark the end of an era, but it also highlights the cutthroat nature of Formula 1. In a sport where talent, timing, and team dynamics are everything, Perez’s Red Bull journey serves as a poignant reminder of how quickly fortunes can change.

As Red Bull and Perez part ways, the million-dollar payout underscores the magnitude of the stakes involved—and the mutual respect that still exists between the two parties.
