Heavy snow halts Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville Monte Carlo test: will rally hopes be dashed?

Snowstorm Strikes: Hyundai’s Monte Carlo Test for Thierry Neuville Postponed Amidst Weather Chaos!

In an unexpected turn of events, a fierce snowstorm has wreaked havoc on Hyundai’s preparations for the World Rally Championship (WRC) season opener in Monte Carlo, leading to a last-minute postponement of Thierry Neuville’s crucial pre-event test. The countdown to one of the most anticipated motorsport events, set to run from January 22-25, has taken a dramatic twist as teams flock to the picturesque south of France to gear up for the asphalt showdown.

While rivals Toyota kicked off their testing regimen under relatively favorable conditions with drivers Elfyn Evans and Oliver Solberg blazing through largely dry roads, Hyundai faced an uphill battle when winter weather swept into the region, blanketing the area in heavy snow. This unforeseen weather event forced the team to abandon their Rally1 pre-event test for Neuville, who had aimed to fine-tune his performance ahead of the highly competitive rally.

Hyundai had initially commenced its testing program on Wednesday, with Adrien Fourmaux behind the wheel and Hayden Paddon expected to take the reins on Friday. However, as snow piled up, Neuville attempted several runs, only to find that the conditions were far too severe for any productive testing. The situation became so dire that tractors equipped with snow ploughs were deployed to clear the roads, but ultimately, the decision was made to halt the day’s testing.

Neuville took to Instagram to express his frustration, stating, “We can believe we are in Sweden or Finland and that we are preparing for Rally Sweden but this is absolutely not the case. We have the winter conditions today.” He acknowledged that while the snowy terrain could be seen as an opportunity to simulate rally conditions, the reality was that it had been years since the team had faced such extreme weather. “It’s not the conditions optimal for us today; that’s not what we were looking for either,” he lamented.

In a follow-up post, Neuville shared a glimmer of hope, revealing that the FIA had granted Hyundai permission to reschedule the test for later in the week. Sunday appears to be the most likely candidate for a resumption of testing. “As you can see, it is still snowing; we even tried to get the snow ploughs through to try and clear a little bit of the big layer of snow, but despite everything, it’s not improved,” he noted. “The snow continues to fall, so we decided to cancel the day. The FIA has also given us permission to postpone the day to the end of the week.”

Despite the setback, Neuville remains optimistic, stressing, “Unfortunately not the day we had hoped for; we’ll test again by the end of the week. I hope to do the necessary work that we had planned to do with more stable conditions to be able to compare the evolutions we wanted to try.”

As the WRC community watches closely, all eyes will be on Hyundai as they prepare to adapt to these challenging conditions and make the most of their rescheduled testing. The road to Monte Carlo is fraught with surprises, and this latest weather disruption serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of motorsport. Will Hyundai bounce back and reclaim their momentum in time for the rally? Only time will tell!
