Former Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill has dropped a bombshell, suggesting that Max Verstappen, the dominant force in recent seasons, may have lost faith in his quest for a fourth consecutive title. The Dutchman, who won seven of the first ten races of the 2024 season, now finds himself and Red Bull trailing behind McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship.
Hill, a seasoned F1 analyst and 1996 world champion, has hinted that Verstappen’s attitude may reflect a driver who has resigned himself to the fact that 2024 is slipping through his fingers. Known for his combative and assertive style on the team radio, Verstappen has been uncharacteristically subdued, which Hill interprets as a sign that the 26-year-old may have accepted his fate this season.
“Max doesn’t seem to be his usual feisty self,” said Hill. “He’s normally quick to demand changes when things go wrong, but recently he’s more resigned, like he knows Red Bull’s issues are too big to overcome right now.”
Verstappen has been vocal about Red Bull’s struggles in recent races, particularly in Azerbaijan, where the car’s balance issues left him languishing behind McLaren’s Lando Norris. Hill speculates that Verstappen may have come to terms with the reality that Red Bull’s once-untouchable reign is faltering, and a comeback in the final seven rounds may be out of reach.
Hill further suggested that Verstappen might already be thinking about his future beyond Red Bull, which could explain his tempered demeanor. Rumors of Verstappen leaving the Milton Keynes-based squad have surfaced in the past, and while the Dutchman is contracted until 2028, a switch to a rival team isn’t out of the question.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Max is already eyeing the future with another team,” Hill added. “If he knows Red Bull can’t deliver the title this year, there’s no need to throw tantrums over the radio. Maybe he’s already planning his next move.”
Despite these speculations, Verstappen has remained loyal to Red Bull, expressing confidence in the team despite its recent struggles. His current contract, which runs through 2028, indicates a long-term commitment, but as the pressure mounts, fans and insiders alike are left wondering if Verstappen’s patience could wear thin.
For now, it seems Verstappen will continue to fight with Red Bull for the remainder of the season. Whether or not the reigning world champion can regain his form and challenge McLaren’s supremacy remains to be seen. However, Hill’s comments have added another layer of intrigue to an already dramatic 2024 Formula 1 season.
