Has Kyle Busch Lost His Edge? Frustrating Clash at Bowman Gray Raises Big Questions

For nearly two decades, Kyle Busch has been a force to be reckoned with in the NASCAR Cup Series. Winning at least one race per season for 19 straight years, he’s built a reputation as one of the most aggressive, relentless, and skilled drivers in the sport.

But as the 2025 season kicks off, Busch’s struggles at the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray have left fans questioning whether the two-time Cup champion is past his prime.

A Clash to Forget: What Went Wrong for Kyle Busch?

Heading into Bowman Gray, Rowdy Nation was hopeful. Busch has always thrived in the Clash, winning the event twice (2012 & 2021) and maintaining an average finish of 8.1 over 18 career starts.

But this time, things went off the rails early—and never got back on track.

💥 Heat 1 Disaster
🔹 Started 29th but never found his rhythm
🔹 Lap 6: Spun out after contact with Justin Haley & Noah Gragson
🔹 Lap 8: Another spin after tangling with Haley
🔹 Barely advanced to the main event

💥 Main Event Struggles
🔹 Lap 21: Spun by Noah Gragson
🔹 Never cracked the Top 10
🔹 Finished a dismal 15th place

For a driver of Busch’s caliber, this wasn’t just a bad race—it was a wake-up call.

Fan Backlash: Is Busch Losing His Touch?

NASCAR fans weren’t shy about their disappointment, with some questioning whether Busch is still the dominant driver he once was.

A viral Winners & Losers post summed up the mood:

✅ Winners:
🏆 Chase Elliott – Pure dominance to start the season
🏆 SVG – Can hold his own on short tracks
🏆 Ryan Blaney – A superstar
🏆 NASCAR – A+ event

❌ Losers:
🚩 Ty Gibbs – “What was that performance?”
🚩 Kyle Busch – “Not this again 🤦‍♂️”
🚩 Erik Jones – “Stop playing nice”

After the race, Busch remained defiant, posting on X (formerly Twitter):
💬 “The Madhouse lived up to its name. But hey, I put it in the show. Going for my fifth-straight Clash podium tonight.”

Confidence is great—but results matter more.

Is Busch in a Slump or Losing His Edge?

This isn’t just about one bad race. Since joining Richard Childress Racing, Busch has flashed moments of brilliance but hasn’t been the consistent frontrunner fans are used to seeing.

🔹 2023: One of the best drivers at RCR, but inconsistent
🔹 2024: Couldn’t match elite speed of Hendrick, JGR, or Penske
🔹 2025: Rough start at Bowman Gray

At 38 years old, Busch is still a highly skilled veteran, but NASCAR’s youth movement is in full swing. With stars like Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, and Tyler Reddick emerging as dominant forces, can Busch keep up?

The Verdict: Don’t Count Rowdy Out Just Yet

One race doesn’t define a season, and Busch has bounced back from adversity before. But if his struggles continue, RCR may need to reevaluate their strategy—and Busch might have to adjust his aggressive driving style to stay competitive.

🚨 Is Kyle Busch still a top-tier driver, or has the sport passed him by?

For now, Rowdy has something to prove—and all eyes will be on him in the next few races to see if he can turn things around.
