Lewis Hamilton’s Potential Ferrari Comeback: Lessons from Debut and Outlook for Chinese Grand Prix

The much-awaited debut of Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari colours at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix left much to be desired, according to former Formula 1 driver and current Sky Sports F1 analyst, Martin Brundle. Unimpressed by Hamilton’s performance, Brundle didn’t mince words in his post-race column, labeling the seven-time champion’s inauguration into the ‘Prancing Horse’ fold as disappointing.

Hamilton, who has carved out an illustrious career in Formula 1, has recently moved to Ferrari, sparking widespread anticipation among fans and pundits alike. However, his initial outing in Melbourne last Sunday failed to live up to the hype. Not only was he outpaced in the qualifying rounds by Charles Leclerc, his new teammate, but the Briton also ended up trailing in the race.

The qualifying rounds saw a head-to-head battle between the new Ferrari teammates, with Leclerc narrowly edging out Hamilton to secure the seventh spot, leaving the latter in eighth. Although Hamilton managed to take the lead momentarily during the race, his reign was short-lived. Unexpected rains at the Albert Park track threw the race into chaos, and Hamilton was unable to maintain his lead.

Brundle, a seasoned Formula 1 commentator and former racer himself, didn’t hold back in his critique of Hamilton’s debut in Ferrari. In his Sky Sports F1 column, he expressed his disappointment, placing the performance under a harsh spotlight. Despite Hamilton’s impressive track record, which includes seven F1 championships, Brundle’s critique underscores that a successful past doesn’t automatically guarantee a glittering future.

Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari was one of the most talked-about moves in recent F1 history. However, the underwhelming start to his journey in red has already begun prompting questions about his compatibility with the new team and car. While it’s still early days and premature to pass judgment, the pressure is undoubtedly on for the decorated champion to bounce back from this initial setback and live up to his reputation in the coming races.
