Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 journey is facing a massive setback as he admits to a significant car “deficit” compared to his teammate Charles Leclerc. The seven-time world champion expressed his frustration after finishing a disappointing seventh at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Despite his best efforts, Hamilton struggled to keep up with Leclerc, who delivered a stellar performance by securing fourth place in qualifying and maintaining that position during the race at Suzuka. Hamilton, on the other hand, started eighth on the grid and only managed to overtake Isack Hadjar to finish in seventh place. The British driver hinted at an issue with an unspecified component in his car that has been holding him back.

Hamilton revealed, “Through the first three races, there’s been a bit of a deficit between both sides of the garage on an element of the car, so on my side, something [is] underperforming.” He believes that this deficit could be costing him around a tenth of a second per lap, which is a significant gap in Formula 1.

The Mercedes driver remains hopeful for improvements in the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix but acknowledges the tough competition from Ferrari, McLaren, and other top teams. Hamilton expressed concerns about his car’s performance and the need to close the gap in terms of speed and downforce.

With Ferrari still dominating the field and McLaren and Mercedes posing a strong challenge, Hamilton knows that he and his team have a lot of work to do. He emphasized the importance of upgrades throughout the season to bridge the performance gap with the leading cars.

Hamilton’s determination to overcome this setback will be put to the test in Bahrain, where he aims to make progress and close the gap with his rivals. As the competition heats up, all eyes will be on Hamilton and Mercedes as they strive to reclaim their position at the top of the Formula 1 grid.
