Team mate George Russell secured seventh place, causing Mercedes to drop even further in the F1 Constructors’ standings. Currently in fourth place with 79 points, they are behind McLaren, also powered by Mercedes engines, with a substantial lead of 154 points.

“We find ourselves in an isolated position. There wasn’t much more for us to achieve today,” expressed Hamilton, the most successful driver in the sport’s history. It was his first race in Italy since announcing his move to Ferrari at the end of the season.

“This is our reality and we must strive to make the most of it. Today, we gave our best,” he lamented.

In the Mercedes race report, Hamilton tried to adopt a more optimistic tone, stating: “Overall, my race was good. I faced a setback that cost me approximately five seconds, but my pace throughout the race was generally strong, so I am satisfied with my performance.

“I had a good start, which was crucial to overtake Tsunoda. From there, I managed to extend my first pit stop, enabling the successful execution of our one-stop strategy.

“We made some progress this weekend, although they are somewhat overshadowed by the gains made by teams like McLaren and Ferrari.

“We will continue to strive to introduce more updates that improve our performance. Until then, we will ensure that we maximize our points score,” he concluded.

Russell also mentioned the “no man’s land,” but stated that the team, once dominant, is still highly motivated. He emphasized the need to keep pushing forward and highlighted that the car has the potential to finish in sixth or seventh place, exactly where they ended up.

In the post-race press release from Mercedes, Russell provided further details about his race, especially regarding a late second pit stop that saw him fall behind Hamilton at the finish line. He explained that they had concerns about the durability of the hard tire, which led to the additional stop. Despite losing a position to Hamilton, they were able to secure an extra point as a team.

Russell described the race as somewhat lonely for his team. Although they closed the gap to Red Bull slightly and extended their advantage over the midfield pack, McLaren and Ferrari also made similar improvements. Russell emphasized the need to bring more performance and make significant strides as quickly as possible. He made it clear that they are not satisfied with their current positions in sixth and seventh place.

The motivation and dedication of everyone in Brackley and Brixworth, who are working tirelessly to bring improvements, greatly inspired Russell. He stressed the importance of continuous effort and maximizing the potential of their package. Russell concluded by stating that they made the most of their resources during the weekend and will strive to do the same in the future.

Toto Wolff, team principal, acknowledged that Mercedes took a small step forward with the second set of upgrades after the Miami race. However, he admitted that their closest competitors have also made progress recently. Despite finishing in sixth and seventh place, Wolff expressed confidence that there is more to come. He emphasized the need for incremental gains and acknowledged that there is still much work to be done. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, Additional reporting by GrandPrix247)
