Lewis Hamilton, the British driver of Mercedes AMG F1, expressed his dissatisfaction with the planned 30kg weight reduction in the new Formula 1 car that will be introduced in 2026. Despite acknowledging that it is a step in the right direction, Hamilton believes it is not enough. The FIA has released guidelines for the next reform of F1 regulations, with the main focus being to make the cars lighter and more agile. Many drivers have emphasized the importance of reducing the minimum weight limit, which has increased from 691kg in 2014 to 798kg in the current ground effect cars. The FIA has now confirmed a 30kg reduction, bringing the weight down to 768kg in 2026. However, Hamilton believes that a more significant reduction could have been achieved. He stated: “It’s just 30 kilos, so it’s going in the right direction, but it’s still heavy.” Hamilton also mentioned that he spoke to some drivers who tested the new car in simulators, and they reported that it seems slow. He concluded by saying: “So we’ll see if it’s really the right direction or not.” Despite his concerns about the car’s aerodynamics and chassis regulations, Hamilton praised the decision to switch to 100% sustainable fuels, calling it a bold and positive step towards sustainability. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that cars are efficient, fast, and contribute to improving the races. Nico Hulkenberg, a Haas driver, echoed Hamilton’s feelings about the weight reduction. He agreed that, while it is a good change, 30kg is not a significant amount, and there may be room for more adjustments before the new regulations come into effect. Hulkenberg also mentioned that the weight reduction will result in less downforce, especially in high-speed corners, leading to a different driving experience. He acknowledged that the change may be challenging, but expressed curiosity about what adjustments can be made in the next year and a half.
