In preparation for the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, Lewis Hamilton showed his dominance in the final free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix. The Formula 1 Mercedes team had a highly encouraging session, with Hamilton leading the pack by nearly four tenths of a second. Despite a late effort from Max Verstappen, Hamilton’s lap time of 1m12.549s was the most impressive of FP3. Mercedes made the strategic decision to equip Hamilton and George Russell with their revised front wing for the first time in this weekend’s practice sessions, choosing to save it for later. Due to rain affecting previous sessions, FP3 was the most representative of the weekend, and the Mercedes W14 stood out during this hour. Russell briefly held the top position, but Hamilton quickly overtook him with over 10 minutes remaining in the session. Hamilton’s dominance was evident as he had the fastest times in all three sectors and was over seven tenths ahead of the competition. Although Russell and Verstappen improved, Verstappen still fell short by 0.374s, securing Hamilton’s top position. Russell finished third, closely followed by Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin. Stroll demonstrated an impressive performance with soft tires during Friday’s practices. Fernando Alonso, Stroll’s teammate, finished with a time three tenths slower than Stroll. Alonso initially set the fastest time with hard tires before focusing on long-run simulations using mediums. Daniel Ricciardo also made an impact, securing the sixth fastest time for RB. He fit in between the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. Ricciardo, winner of the 2014 Canadian GP, had a consistent performance throughout FP3, finishing over four tenths ahead of his teammate Yuki Tsunoda. Alonso and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez took eighth and ninth positions, respectively. Charles Leclerc, winner of the Monaco GP, was the highest-placed Ferrari driver, but only managed a disappointing tenth place. Leclerc expressed frustration with his car’s performance, especially regarding braking ability. He described the team’s overall speed as extremely slow. Leclerc was eight tenths behind Hamilton, while his teammate Carlos Sainz finished two tenths behind him in 12th place. The session was busy, with a total of 574 laps completed by the teams. There was a brief interruption when Zhou Guanyu spun and hit the wall with the rear of his Sauber. Additionally, Alex Albon had to abandon his final fast lap attempts after hitting the “wall of champions” at the final chicane. Although his right rear tire appeared to fold inwards, Albon managed to return to the pits without significant damage. Verstappen also had a strong impact during his final lap, but fortunately avoided any damage.
