Hamilton Calls Out Verstappen’s “Unchanged” Aggression, Doubts Red Bull Star Will Alter Approach Without Rule Reforms

Lewis Hamilton claims Max Verstappen’s ultra-aggressive driving style, seen during their dramatic 2021 title clash, remains unchanged. In a recent press conference, Hamilton reflected on Verstappen’s latest incidents with title rival Lando Norris, saying the Dutchman’s unyielding approach is a result of the current rules allowing it — and it’s only likely to change if Formula 1 revisits its regulatory structure.

“Nothing has really changed since 2021,” Hamilton remarked, alluding to their bitter battle for the championship that year. “The same rules apply, and as long as those stay in place, what you saw in 2021 will keep happening.”

The Mexico GP last weekend showcased Verstappen’s unyielding style, as he collided with Norris multiple times, earning two 10-second penalties. Similar controversies occurred earlier this season, notably when Verstappen aggressively defended against Norris in Austria and again at the United States GP. This string of incidents has reignited debate over F1’s leniency on aggressive driving tactics, which Hamilton suggests has emboldened Verstappen to race “to the edge” — and sometimes beyond it.

While Verstappen’s intensity has thrilled fans in 2024, Hamilton believes adjustments in track design and rules might deter such risky moves. “The runoff areas play a big role. If it were gravel or grass, drivers wouldn’t push so far off. I hope to see the sport make some changes in that area.”

This season has proven gripping for fans, with a close battle reminiscent of Hamilton and Verstappen’s 2021 rivalry. With three races remaining, Norris trails Verstappen by only 47 points, a gap that has kept the title fight fierce. “It’s a tight race, and there’s still a chance for Lando to catch up if he gains just over 11 points per race,” Hamilton said. “And with the form they [McLaren] have shown, that’s not impossible.”

Hamilton also acknowledged Verstappen’s formidable racecraft and strengths, admitting that his Red Bull rival is tough to beat. “Max has very few, if any, weaknesses. He’s got a relentless drive, and that’s always dangerous for his competitors.”

Despite Verstappen’s high-stakes tactics, Hamilton remains enthusiastic about the excitement this title battle brings to F1, viewing it as a win for fans and the sport. “It’s thrilling to see such a close fight, and it’s going to be an incredible finish to the season. I’m just hoping I get a good seat to watch it all — even if they’re ahead of Mercedes,” Hamilton concluded.
