Winner Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing and second-placed Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes AMG F1 stood side by side in the Sprint parc ferme after the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Hamilton recently expressed his belief that it would not be logical for Verstappen to switch teams from Red Bull to Mercedes in 2025.
Hamilton, who has decided to end his long association with Mercedes to join Ferrari next season, shared his thoughts on the possible move. Although many names have been mentioned as possible replacements for Hamilton, recent events even brought Verstappen’s name into the conversation.
Red Bull has been embroiled in a power struggle following an investigation into allegations against Christian Horner. Although Horner was cleared of any wrongdoing, Verstappen’s father, Jos, suggested that his position was no longer sustainable. Jos was seen talking to Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff at the Bahrain Grand Prix and the two were spotted dining together, fueling speculation about a possible switch for Max.
When asked about Mercedes targeting Verstappen, Hamilton expressed his lack of surprise and acknowledged Verstappen’s talent. He also defended Verstappen’s actions in the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi race, stating that he would have done the same in his position. Hamilton understood a team’s desire to have the best driver who attracts attention and sponsorships, but believed it would not make sense for Verstappen to leave Red Bull.
The decision seems logical considering the recent performance of both teams. Mercedes has only achieved one victory in the last two seasons, while Red Bull has been the dominant force in Formula 1. Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028 and has expressed his intention to stay with the team. He has emphasized his happiness within the team and the lack of reason to leave, as long as they continue to perform well.
