Hailie Deegan, the motorsport icon with an illustrious background in stock car racing, recently shared her candid thoughts on her transition to single-seater IndyCar racing. Describing the shift as “wild,” Deegan has had to adjust to a completely different racing style characterized by high cornering speeds, precise braking, and a distinct aversion to physical contact.

The former NASCAR driver admitted to feeling apprehensive ahead of her IndyCar debut. During her initial outing at an Indy NXT Series test last October, she posted a speed of 3 mph slower than the penultimate driver, which fueled her nervousness ahead of her first IndyCar qualifying session.

Despite boasting an impressive record, including becoming the first woman to win three races during her stint in NASCAR’s K&N West Division and securing two top-five finishes across three full-time Truck seasons, Deegan’s confidence appears to have taken a hit. Her performance in the 2024 Xfinity season, where she failed to secure a single top-ten finish across 17 starts, coupled with three DNFs, seems to have left her somewhat shaken.

Opening up about her feelings, Deegan confessed to feeling out of place before the Indy NXT season opener in St. Petersburg, Florida. Expressing her excitement for her first qualifying session, she also acknowledged the challenges presented by the IndyCar vehicle, which lacks power steering. The 23-year-old aptly described her situation as “foreign.”

Deegan’s IndyCar debut didn’t start on a high note, as she struggled during practice and her qualifier, which left her at the back of the grid. However, she remained focused on her primary goal of surviving the race and learning from the experience.

True to her reputation for resilience and dedication, Deegan weathered the race’s challenges. Despite multiple crashes and mechanical failures that marked the St. Petersburg IndyCar race, she managed to avoid the chaos and even gain a few spots. She finished on the lead lap in 14th place, marking a small yet significant victory.

However, the race took a toll on Deegan physically. After the race, she was seen clutching her right forearm, which was visibly swollen. This was due to the absence of power steering in her vehicle, which made the race physically demanding. Deegan acknowledged the need for more gym time to improve her physical strength for future races.

Despite the initial jitters and physical toll, Deegan has been making steady progress in her IndyCar journey. It will be interesting to see how she continues to evolve and improve in this challenging motorsport discipline.
